Al buscar estas fotos y mirarlas, vuelvo a ese momento y es inevitable sentir una emoción inmensa y no es por el número de años que cumplía mi madre ese día, sino porque ese día fue inmensamente especial, lleno de preparativos previos, sorpresas, secretos y tiempo, mucho tiempo de creación de un día que fuera absolutamente especial. Cuando las cosas se preparan con amor, cuando se preparan con las propias manos, cuando todo es hecho por uno mismo, un detalle, un regalo, todo, tiene mucho más valor que algo comprado, al menos así lo veo y lo siento. Una tarjeta escrita a mano es mucho más valiosa que una tarjeta comprada. Lo mismo una torta, una decoración, todo cobra un valor incalculable. Este cumpleaños se dio en el año 2013, parece que fue hace tanto tiempo, de hecho, lo fue, han pasado casi 13 años y ella, mi madre, nunca sospecho lo que estábamos organizando mi hermano y yo. Todo debía estar muy bien organizado, detalle por detalle, hasta los minutos contaban. Y además no podía escapársenos nada de lo que preparábamos. El día completo debía ser sorpresa tras sorpresa, desde el desayuno hasta una fiesta con la gente que ella más apreciaba. Creo que la celebración de los cumpleaños es muy importante, porque lo que se está celebrando es la vida misma, el paso por este mundo, los aprendizajes, los caminos que hemos tomado y el hecho de haber venido por una razón, que al comienzo de la vida podemos desconocer pero que luego sabremos cual es.

Looking through these photos takes me back to that moment, and I can’t help but feel a deep sense of emotion. It’s not because of the age my mother was turning that day, but because that day was truly special, filled with all the preparations, surprises, secrets and time, so much time spent creating a day that would be absolutely special. When things are prepared with love, when they are made with your own hands, when everything is done by yourself, a little gesture, a gift, everything, it has far more value than something bought, at least that is how I see it and feel it. A handwritten card is far more valuable than a shop-bought one. The same goes for a cake, a decoration; everything takes on an incalculable value. Ella sabía que algo haríamos, eran sus 60 años, por lo que intuía que habría una torta y una reunión, y algunos preparativos para comer, pero sólo eso sospechaba, por lo que no le extraño que yo hiciera la torta. Pero se sorprendió al ver la decoración hecha por mí, con mis propias manos, sin ayuda de máquinas ni nada por estilo. Me gustó trabajar el chocolate y crear ese moño gigante. La torta pesaba muchos kilos, y la masa es una receta familiar que lleva muchos años entre nosotros. Torta de caramelo con trozos de chocolate dentro, dulce de leche y muy húmeda. Es deliciosa y la que realizamos cada año, cambiando la decoración por supuesto, pero la base es la misma.

En el año 2008 había hecho el curso de diseño gráfico, por lo que sabía cómo diseñar lo que fuera, tarjetas de todo tipo y cosas parecidas. Con mucho tiempo de antelación cree los souvenirs, que consistían en pequeñas tarjetas dobles impresas de ambos lados con diseños personalizados y a mi madre le encantan las orquídeas. Creo que se dio cuenta que algo estaba organizando. Pero me los dio. Los coloqué en una caja de bombones en forma de corazón, una caja que llevaba muchos años en la familia, realizada con tela de terciopelo rojo y dentro le coloqué un pañuelo mío. Pero volvamos al inicio del día de su cumpleaños. Días antes fui a una tienda a encargar un desayuno artesanal y especial. Jamás había hecho eso, las posibilidades económicas no lo permitían, pero este cumpleaños era especial. Aproveche un momento en que mi madre no estaba en casa y camine mucho, pero mucho para llegar al lugar, encargué el desayuno, que llegaría a las siete de la mañana, y volví a casa como si nada hubiera pasado. Esa mañana estábamos esperando en la puerta, muertos de frío, porque era invierno y estaba helando. El desayuno llego justo a tiempo. Terminé de prepararlo con el agua caliente que tenía lista y se lo llevamos a la cama. Jamás olvidaré su rostro de sorpresa y felicidad, tampoco olvidaré las lágrimas que brotaban de sus ojos. Fue muy especial. Cosas sencillas pero que nunca antes habíamos hecho.

Durante el día decoré un patio interno con luz natural que teníamos, que luego sirvió para dar clases de pintura. Cociné, terminé detalles de la torta y preparé una mesa pequeña donde estarían la torta, ramos de flores y todos los regalos de los invitados. También diseñé una tarjeta enorme también doble e impresa por ambos lados, donde en uno había fotos de ella, de pequeña, de los 30 años y una reciente. Por el lado de adentro decoraciones con flores de orquídeas, una frase hermosa y un espacio para que cada invitado le escriba con su letra un mensaje y esa tarjeta la pudiera guardar para siempre. Creo que este cumpleaños es un recuerdo lleno de muchos recuerdos dentro. M encargué de tomar todas las fotos posibles para que ella pueda tenerlas, con los regalos, las flores, las decoraciones, los souvenirs, la torta y cada uno de los invitados. No recuerdo ahora mismo cuantos eran, pero estaban todos los que ella apreciaba. Por supuesto no faltó la música de su época sonando todo el tiempo durante la reunión. Cada detalle contaba en ese momento, todo debía ser perfecto y lo fue.
