We moved at a brisk pace, without distractions, focused on our mission. Upon locating the barber, I realised that this moment required delicate diplomacy. When communicating with a teenager, it is essential to allow him to express first what he wants for his appearance. I acted as a facilitator, respecting his growing independence, but clarifying necessary details. ‘Please tidy up that hair, my dear friend,’ I suggested to the barber whilst Alejandro settled into the chair. Under the skilful handling of the tools, the youthful mess gradually gave way. When he had finished, my grandson’s face had transformed into that of a handsome young man with a striking presence. Satisfied, I paid for the service and we left there happily, looking for some ice cream to celebrate the new look and enjoy some leisure time.
