The cost was somewhat high for me, as I had to pay an installer since I don't have the specialized tools to do the job myself. Had I possessed the tools, I would have done it, as I learned the basics some time ago thanks to some good friends who taught me the ropes. >Finalmente lo logré hace un mes. For a month, it worked perfectly—it felt great to get it done before the heat intensified. I went up to evaluate the situation and replaced the run capacitor with a new one I had at home to rule out a faulty component. Even then, the failure persisted. I proceeded to check the thermal overload protector, but when I removed the terminal cover, I realized it didn't have an external one, so I assumed it was an internal thermal protector. >Tengo la unidad del compresor en el techo de la casa, pero desde abajo podía escuchar como el compresor arrancaba solo por 2 segundos para volverse apagar. At that moment, I knew the compressor was done for. I went back up to inspect it, and upon opening it, I discovered a catastrophic failure—a sudden decompression of the refrigerant through the hermetic seal where the electrical terminals are located (a terminal blowout). >Tras una revisión de todo lo que conocía, arme y lo volví a encender pero paso lo peor, se escuchó un fuerte ruido de expulsión de gas, en ese momento supe que el compresor se dañó. I am not entirely sure of the cause—perhaps overheating due to an electric arc, as the compressor oil splattered on the internal walls of the unit is completely carbonized and black. It is possible that the current draw was too high, perhaps due to dirty coils combined with the recent gas charge, causing it to fail under the workload. >Una clara evidencia que debo reemplazarlo por un compresor nuevo. La verdad no sé la razón, quizás un sobrecalentamiento debido a un arco eléctrico, lo digo porque el aceite del compresor que quedó en las paredes internar del equipo se ve negro. A new compressor can cost around $200, which is significantly less than the $500 to $700 USD a brand-new unit would cost. The downside is that I cannot afford such an expense right now. It is disheartening because we waited so long to have this air conditioning, and now we must wait who knows how long to have it back. >Es duro perder el aire en esta época de calor.
