One of the most glaring injustices of the last Academy Awards ceremony was Amanda Seyfried's absence from the nominations. This actress delivers one of her best performances in this film. She fully commits to her character; her strength is palpable in every scene. Therefore, she deserved, at the very least, to be on the list of nominees, but we all know that the Oscars are a game of public relations and marketing.

I don't know if the fact that director Mona Fastvold, who also deserved recognition at these awards for her work, played a role in this. She co-wrote Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, and Corbet is now co-writing this film, Ann Lee. Last year there were some controversies, both regarding the use of AI in The Brutalist and an alleged pro-Zionist message, in addition to other things the director said in a speech. The truth is, Mona Fastvold had already captivated me when she directed the film The World to Come, which I reviewed some time ago, and I remember insisting that I should keep an eye on her future projects.

The film tells the story of Mother Ann Lee, a preacher who founded the Shakers, a group named for the tremors experienced by its followers. This group also emerged from a schism within the Quakers, who named them after the tremors of their faithful. If you've ever attended a Pentecostal evangelical meeting today, where believers experience tremors and the like, well, all of that stems from the influence of the Quakers and the Shakers of the past. That's why I don't follow any religion, least of all modern ones, since everything is a mixture or influence of ancient beliefs and rituals.

How does an illiterate woman manage to convince so many people that she represents the second coming of Christ? The film shows us this entire process. Religion has always been a powerful tool for controlling people; the human need to believe in a higher power, combined with an era in which faith was so important in people's lives, created the perfect environment for the rise of sects and religious movements, each claiming to be the true faith of salvation. Even today, new religious movements emerge.

Although I'm not a believer in any religion, I must admit that I enjoyed this film. I don't share any of the negative opinions. It's true that the pacing can be a bit slow in some parts and that the constant scenes of the Shakers dancing can become repetitive, but that was the part I liked the most. The work of composer Daniel Blumberg, who adapted the Shakers' anthems and created the soundtrack, is also noteworthy. I think the film takes risks, and I really value that these days, when it's hard to find filmmakers bold enough to tell a story without playing it safe. For me, the film's positive aspects far outweigh the minor details that some professional critics have pointed out.

The entire cast seemed very focused and believable. Of course, Amanda Seyfried gets the most applause, even though she doesn't physically resemble the real Ann Lee. If you search online, you'll find reference portraits of the real woman, and she wasn't a very attractive woman. In fact, from what I could find out, the real one wasn't even very physically attractive. Perhaps that's why she had her traumas and decided that sexual abstinence was essential to being close to Christ. Something that goes against our very nature, but that's how many religious rules are, and that's why I don't belong to any religion, because I love sex.

¿Cómo logra una mujer analfabeta convencer a tanta gente de que ella representa la segunda venida de Cristo? La película nos muestra todo este proceso. La religión siempre ha sido un arma muy poderosa para controlar a la gente; la necesidad humana de creer en un poder superior, combinada con una época en la que la fe era tan importante en la vida de las personas, crea el entorno perfecto para el surgimiento de sectas y movimientos religiosos, cada uno afirmando ser la verdadera fe de la salvación. Incluso hoy en día, surgen nuevos movimientos religiosos.

Aunque no soy creyente de ninguna religión, debo admitir que me gustó esta película. No comparto ninguna de las opiniones negativas. Es cierto que el ritmo puede ser demasiado lento en algunas partes y que las constantes escenas de los Shakers bailando pueden volverse repetitivas, pero esa fue la parte que más me gustó. También cabe destacar el trabajo del compositor Daniel Blumberg, quien se encargó de adaptar los himnos de los Shakers y crear la banda sonora. Creo que la película se arriesga, y valoro mucho eso hoy en día, cuando es difícil encontrar cineastas lo suficientemente audaces como para contar una historia sin ir a lo seguro. Para mí, los aspectos positivos de la película superan con creces los pequeños detalles que algunos críticos profesionales han señalado.

Todo el reparto parecía muy concentrado y creíble. Por supuesto, quien recibe más aplausos es Amanda Seyfried, aunque no se parece físicamente a la verdadera Ann Lee. Si buscas en internet, encontrarás retratos de referencia de la mujer real, y no era una mujer muy atractiva. De hecho, según lo que pude averiguar, la verdadera ni siquiera parecía muy atractiva físicamente. Quizás por eso tuvo sus traumas y decidió que la abstinencia sexual era esencial para estar cerca de Cristo. Algo que va en contra de nuestra propia naturaleza, epro asi son muchas normas de las religiones y pro eso yo no estoy en ninguna , porque yo adoro el sexo.
