Life Runs on Planning, Not Spontaneity
Since time immemorial up till now, planning has been an essential ingredient that helps set things in motion and guides people toward achieving their dreams. And if anyone ever asked me what I thought about being spontaneous in life, I would describe it as a privilege, one that many people cannot afford.
In our society, we have watched parents with average incomes build their homes from scratch through their efforts as civil servants. We have seen individuals from low-income backgrounds gain admission into top schools they might never have imagined attending. We have also come across people who relocated to better countries with their families. At the center of all these accomplishments is planning, and we all know that without it, none of these people would have achieved their goals.
They did not simply wake up and decide to go with the flow or remain idle with their thoughts. They went to the drawing board and made plans, which contributed significantly to their success. Those who built houses from their salaries planned how much to set aside every month until it was enough to lay the foundation and raise a proper structure. Students who secured scholarships and gained admission into globally recognized institutions planned by using the internet to gather relevant information, seeking mentorship and studying ahead before submitting an application. Those who relocated ensured they spoke to successful immigrants, explored immigration options and limitations, and saved for the expenses involved.
I have also learned from the lives of these people and now plan most of my activities ahead of time. Every month, I plan how to manage my income, whether to spend it on something important or save toward a goal. I also plan my day using a to-do list, and each time I follow it through, I realize how much more I accomplish compared to simply going with the flow.
Even for the birthdays of my loved ones, I plan ahead to ensure I show up for them in the best way possible. Whether it is buying a gift or preparing a monetary surprise, I ensure to put my plans into writing. This helps me identify what fits within my budget and allows me to make the necessary adjustments in time.
My long-term goals are also planned, with alternatives set in place, in case things do not go as expected, and I think this is the beauty of planning. It helps me understand what is achievable, what steps to take if plan A fails, and how to manage risks before they become problems.
What makes this submission interesting is that I am naturally a spontaneous person. I could wake up one morning and decide to follow whatever comes to mind or move through my day based on my emotions, all without caring about what happens next. So, truly, there are are also a few things I do not plan for because I know my lack of planning will not affect the outcome in a significant way. However, realizing that too much spontaneity can pose some risks to my goals, especially in a country without fully functional systems, has made me prioritize planning for the important aspects of my life.
I strongly beleive that dreams cannot be built on hope, so my ultimate ingredient for achieving success in every area of my life is planning and committing to seeing those plans through to the end.
