New Quake II Sega Dreamcast Port Shown
When id Software released Quake II it was an interesting followup to a seminal title. This was nothing new to id Software who had made sequels to titles that nearly entered the zeitgeist so to speak prior. Quake II was my first real exposure to id Software on my own computer. Before I had to play limited bursts here and there based on what friends would let me play (it wasn’t very much) so I was not able to really dial in Doom, Doom II, or Quake. With Quake II though, I was able to dial in and play and just enjoy the experience on my terms. I know you may be thinking, there is already ports for Quake II to the Sega Dreamcast, you are right. This one is better though.
Closer to the OpenGL Version
The darkness of the game does make it harder to play but it also adds to the ambience. Another bonus of the game being so dark is lighting is more pronounced – blow something up, it lights the room. Shoot your weapon close to objects, it lights up the area and that light follows your weapon fire if there is a light emitting from it.
While this is a work in progress, I do hope there is an option to lighten the game a bit. At least a tiny bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN23SN53S8k
Lack of Control
According to TheSegaGuru on YouTube, the only control option available is controller. Keyboard and mouse is not implemented yet. This may be a bummer if you have the accessories to play closer to the PC version.
It seems this port is working to be as close to the PC original as possible. I do hope that means at least some mods are capable of running. Anyone that knows how the fanbase can be rabid with supporting games with new levels, things that the original developers never intended, etc.
