Fan Ports Super Mario Bros to Sega Master System
Fans are constantly doing things companies will not. Obviously, the way history went meant Nintendo was never going to allow their mascots on another console. Yes, I am ignoring the Philips CD-i as hard as the gaming market did. Had the gaming crash of 1984 not happened, we might have seen an official port of Super Mario Bros on the Sega Master System. We don’t have to play in the sandbox of Harry Turtledove as a fan has released a proof of concept for Super Mario Bros running on the Sega Master System.
Sega Fans Do What Nintendon’t
Right now, and potentially forever, only the first level is included in this proof of concept. According to Time Extension, the developer, LackofTrack has expressed interest in doing more in the future. I would love to see a release featuring FM sound and more improvements graphically.
Time Extension does mention that the sprites used appear to be from the Super Mario All-Stars Collection. They do indeed have that look about them which is fine making this basically an 8-Bit game based on that classic SNES release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3_iWi2RpaI
Can Nintendo Stop This
In a word, yes. This release uses graphics, sounds, etc that are protected by law and owned by Nintendo. The way this Sega Master System version of Super Mario Bros is made available definitely puts this in the sights for legal involvement.
The decompile project version of the original Super Mario Bros was, according to SMSPower forum post was used heavily for reference. That means there is probably no way to release this version like other, legally protected projects, in requiring the fan to provide an original copy of Super Mario Bros to work.
With that said, if you are interested in seeing Super Mario Bros running on the Sega Master System, grab the download from SMSPower while you can.
