When My Cat Did Fungi Hunting for Me

I didn’t have to go fungi hunting today because my cat found mushrooms in our garden.

I was looking out the window and saw him tumbling and rolling around. I thought he had found a mouse, and I was about to tell him off. I looked closer, and I saw two glistening inkcaps that he was dealing with.

Then he tapped one gently, like it was his tiny friend.

Since this mushroom is quite fragile, it got knocked over.
One thing though, my kitty knows mushrooms because I take him a lot when I go fungi hunting, so he must have felt ecstatic to find one in the garden.

Before they were damaged, I picked them up, but his eyes were hooked on them, so I held one closer to him, and he sniffed it for a little while and almost paused in one position.

He looked so satisfied, almost blissed out. Maybe there’s something in those mushrooms that makes cats feel relaxed, who knows? Their senses are incredibly sharp. Or maybe he was just proud of himself for finding something he knows I love. A little mushroom hunter, just like me… or like any of us who can’t resist a good find, haha!

So I put it down to see what he’d do. He placed his paws on it so gently, almost stroking it, as if the mushroom was a little friend of his.

Anyway, since they were in perfect condition and looking lovely, I ended up sautéing them and really enjoyed eating them!
