From my little corner of planet Earth, surrounded by nature and sitting in my hammock, I’m enjoying a delicious cup of coffee—something that inspires me and makes me reflect on certain circumstances that sometimes go unnoticed, but that are significant in the lives of us older adults, as they say. On this occasion, I’m bringing up a very sensitive topic, for both parents and children, where we need to look at both sides of the coin, because I believe we shouldn’t judge, but rather try to understand. Isn’t it about judging, or determining who is right? We just have to think about the older adult, because after they’ve struggled and worked hard, they end up left behind. Some children aren’t interested in or don’t care about their parents’ feelings. To me, this isn’t right, even if society says otherwise. They say: **“What a good son ‘Perencejito’ is—he took his parents with him.”** Have you ever stopped to think whether his parents actually wanted to step out of their comfort zone and break their routine? I’m no mental health expert or anything like that. But speaking for myself, I go on vacation, and there comes a point where I can’t relax and I just want to come back quickly. Although I’ll admit I’m not someone who’s particularly attached to home—on the contrary, I love to travel. But there comes a time when I need to hit “Pause” and find my own space to restore balance to my mind, body, and soul. From my perspective, this is only achieved in my comfort zone—doing what I love, walking barefoot in a loose-fitting dress, and enjoying a cup of coffee in my garden. Eating whenever I want. Following my daily routine, because every moment counts for my health. This isn’t just true for me, but for all older adults. In other words, we need to be in our comfort zone at any given moment to achieve well-being and mental health. But sometimes this isn't understood, and some children say their parents are in the way. I've heard them say: **Pure!, get out of the way, you're in my way** We need to be empathetic toward older adults—or the “pure,” as grandparents were called in Venezuela in the 1970s and 1980s. We must open our eyes and understand that their limitations are a natural part of aging and should not be a source of ridicule. I’ve heard children say: **“Here goes Abigail again, with the same old story. You’ve told me this a thousand times.”** Understanding, showing compassion, and recognizing that quality of life and mental health are very important can help address a major issue among older adults. I think we need to be reasonable and recognize that parents deserve respect; they shouldn’t be mocked, much less told that they’re in the way—especially after they’ve given everything for their children. To me, this is inconceivable. Faced with these dilemmas, it’s necessary to understand what mental health is, and the Pan American Health Organization defines it as: >“Mental health is a state of well-being that enables people to cope with life’s stresses, develop their abilities, learn, work, and contribute to their community. When it comes to older adults, the definition is more complicated because it involves aspects that aren’t very obvious. Do their children have to figure out for themselves what’s going through their minds? How do they feel? What bothers them? Some people, when they reach a certain age, let themselves die of sadness and loneliness, and very few of them speak up about it. Perhaps to avoid causing trouble or out of shame. We have to put ourselves in their shoes. It’s very difficult to accept the situation—for example, that they suffer from incontinence. Perhaps some of you will find my question uncomfortable. But I’ll ask it anyway: Who should be comfortable—the children or the parents? It’s hard to answer this age-old question. Some do it to ease their guilt for not giving them enough of their time and love. Others do it for protection, comfort, and to provide them with security. There are cases upon cases that make us doubt, but the real issue isn’t “who’s right?” It’s “how can we find a solution that minimizes the risks to older adults and their mental health?” Here are my brief thoughts, as I enjoy the birdsong, the flowers, the green foliage, the butterflies, and the barking of my pets: Faraday and little Oliver. ## Case after case For example, in Venezuela, children had to take their parents out of the country. Imagine an elderly person who lives surrounded by nature and has their own routine. They’re taken to live in an apartment where they can only enjoy the sun’s rays from a small balcony. Sitting in a chair in front of a window and sometimes living with strangers. There are other cases, like that of my friend Sol María, whose family works outside her city and whose son took her to live with him. He has a very demanding schedule and doesn’t give her a chance to travel. When he leaves her alone at home, he’s worried because she has knee problems. Likewise, she’s alone and cooped up because her husband and son work all day, even on Saturdays and Sundays. And on holidays. She tells me about her loneliness and fears. That she wants to go home because she wants to sit and have coffee on the porch. The only thing she sees from the balcony is the pool area. I’ve noticed she’s very depressed, and she sent me some photos because I told her, “Capture your moments and find something to do.” Another situation—one I find even more regrettable—is when children force their parents to sell their properties as if they were the owners, sometimes without even asking for their opinion. This is after their parents have worked their entire lives to acquire what they have. And for what? Well, to take them out of their comfort zone. They take everything, and later, no one wants to take care of them, so they lock them up in a nursing home with strangers. All of the above happens more often than you might think. Many times they die alone after having given so much love. I’m not judging; this is just a reflection because I don’t know what will become of me. I believe that older adults should also have a say in their lives. But they often don’t dare to ask for help, and it’s very difficult for them to express what they want. Even so, subjecting them to confinement, loneliness, and treatments they don’t want to undergo is not living, nor is it having a quality of life, and this affects their mental health. If a change of environment is needed, it should be done gradually, not abruptly, so that they can adjust and it doesn’t cause them anxiety, stress, or fear. As C.S. Lewis said: “Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also harder to bear.” Frequent attempts to hide mental pain only add to the burden: it’s easier to say “I have a toothache” than to say “My heart is broken.” **Where does their mental health fit in?** So, “listen up”; to build well-being for older adults and help them achieve balance, a great deal of patience and love is needed, along with providing them with optimal conditions that ensure their physical and mental health.

Desde mi rinconcito del planeta Tierra, rodeada de la naturaleza y en mi hamaca, disfruto de un delicioso café, algo que me inspira y me hace reflexionar sobre ciertas circunstancias que a veces pasan desapercibidas, pero que tienen relevancia en la vida de nosotros los adultos mayores, como nos dicen por ahí. En esta oportunidad traigo a colación un tema muy delicado, tanto para los padres como para los hijos, y donde hay que analizar los dos lados de la balanza, porque creo que no hay que juzgar, sino tratar de entender. ¿No se trata de juzgar, ni de determinar quién tiene la razón? Solo hay que pensar en el adulto mayor, porque después de que se ha batallado y trabajado, al final quedan rezagados. A algunos hijos no les interesa ni importa conocer los sentimientos de sus padres. Para mí, esto no está bien aunque la sociedad diga lo contrario. Dicen: **“Qué buen hijo es ‘perencejito’, pues se llevó a sus padres”.** ¿Se han puesto a pensar si sus padres deseaban salir de su zona de confort y de su rutina? No soy especialista en salud mental ni nada que se parezca. Pero, lo digo por mí, yo salgo de vacaciones, llega un momento donde no logro descansar y deseo volver rápidamente. Aunque les confieso que no soy una persona a la que le guste mucho su casa y, por el contrario, me fascina viajar. Pero llega un momento en que necesito hacer “Stop” y busco mi acomodo para lograr el equilibrio de mi mente, cuerpo y alma. Desde mi punto de vista, esto solo se logra en la zona de confort, para hacer lo que me gusta, caminar descalza, con una batica holgada y disfrutar de un cafecito en mi jardín. Comer a la hora que lo desee. Hacer mi rutina diaria, pues cada momento cuenta para mi salud. Eso no solo me sucede a mí, sino a todos los adultos mayores. Es decir, se requiere estar en la zona de confort en un momento dado para alcanzar el bienestar y la salud mental. Pero, esto a veces no se entiende y algunos hijos expresan que sus viejitos estorban. Los he escuchado decirles: **¡”Pure”!, quítate del medio, me estorbas** Es necesario ser empáticos con los adultos mayores o los “pure” como se les decía en los años 70 y 80 en Venezuela, a los abuelitos. Hay que abrir los ojos y entender que sus limitaciones son propias de la edad y por eso no deben ser motivo de burla. He escuchado a hijos decir: **“¡Otra vez Abigail, con la misma cantaleta. Me lo has repetido mil veces”** Comprender, ser compasivos y entender que la calidad de vida y la salud mental son muy importantes puede ayudar a solucionar un problema mayor en los adultos mayores. Creo que hay que se razonables y pensar que los padres merecen respeto y no sé qué se burlen de ellos. Y mucho menos expresar que estorban. Después que unos padres han dado todo por sus hijos. Para mí, esto es inconcebible. Ante estas disyuntivas, es necesario saber qué es la salud mental, y la Organización Panamericana de la Salud la define: >“La salud mental es un estado de bienestar que permite a las personas afrontar el estrés de la vida, desarrollar sus habilidades, aprender, trabajar y contribuir a su comunidad. Cuando se trata de los adultos mayores, es más complicada la definición porque involucra aspectos que no son muy obvios. ¿Y los hijos tienen que ideárselas para saber qué es lo que pasa por su mente?, ¿qué sienten?, ¿qué les incomoda? Algunas personas cuando llegan a cierta edad se dejan morir de tristeza y soledad, y muy pocos lo dicen. Quizás por no dar molestias o por pena. Hay que ponerse en sus zapatos. Pues es muy difícil aceptar la situación, como por ejemplo que sufren de incontinencia. Quizás a algunos les va a incomodar mi pregunta. Pero, de igual manera se las hago: **¿Quiénes deben estar cómodos, los hijos o los padres?** Es difícil responder esta pregunta de las mil lochas. Algunos, para minimizar sus culpas por no darles parte de su tiempo y amor. Otros, por protección, comodidad y darles seguridad. Hay casos de casos, que nos hacen dudar, pero en sí el problema no es ¿quién tiene la razón? Si no, ¿cómo darle solución minimizando los riesgos para los adultos mayores y su salud mental? Esta es mi pequeña reflexión, mientras disfruto del trinar de los pajaritos, de las flores, del verde del follaje, de las mariposas y del ladrido de mis mascotas: Faraday y el pequeño Oliver. ## Casos de casos Por ejemplo, en Venezuela, los hijos tuvieron que llevarse a sus padres fuera del país. Imagínense a un ser humano adulto mayor que vive rodeado de la naturaleza y con su rutina. Se los llevan a vivir en un apartamento donde solo desde un balcón pequeño pueden disfrutar de los rayos del sol. En una silla frente a una ventana y viviendo algunas veces con personas desconocidas. Hay otros casos, como el de mi amiga Sol María, cuya familia trabaja fuera de su ciudad y su hijo se la llevó a vivir con él. Él tiene un horario muy fuerte y no le da chance de viajar. Cuando la deja sola en su casa, está preocupado porque ella tiene problemas con las rodillas. De igual manera, está sola y encerrada porque su esposo e hijo trabajan todo el día, hasta los sábados y domingos. Y días feriados. Ella me habla de su soledad y miedos. Que quiere irse a su casa porque desea sentarme a tomar café en el porche. Lo único que ve desde el balcón es el área de la piscina. La he notado muy deprimida y me envió unas fotos porque le dije "captura tus momentos y busca algo que hacer". Otro caso, que creo más lamentable, es que los hijos obliguen a sus padres a vender sus propiedades como si ellos fueran los dueños y a veces sin siquiera pedirles su opinión. Después de que estos han trabajado toda su vida para obtener los que tienen. ¿Y para qué? Pues, para sacarlos de su zona de confort. Se quedan con todo y, posteriormente, nadie quiere cargar con ellos y los encierran en un asilo con gente extraña. Todo lo anterior planteado es más frecuente de lo que ustedes creen. Muchas veces fallecen solos y después de haber dado tanto amor. No estoy juzgando, sino que es una reflexión porque no sé qué será de mí. Creo que los adultos mayores también deben opinar sobre su vida. Pero no se atreven muchas veces a pedir auxilio y es muy difícil expresar lo que desean. Aun así, el someterlos a un encierro, a la soledad y a tratamientos a los cuales no desean ser sometidos, no es vivir ni es tener calidad de vida, y esto afecta su salud mental. Si se requiere un cambio de ambiente, debe ser paso a paso y no de manera brusca para que lo asimilen y no les cause ansiedades, estrés ni miedos. Como dijo C.S. Lewis: “El dolor mental es menos dramático que el dolor físico, pero es más común y también más difícil de soportar”. El intento frecuente de ocultar el dolor mental aumenta la carga: es más fácil decir "Me duele una muela" que decir "Tengo el corazón roto". **¿Dónde queda su salud mental?** Así que “oído al tambor”; para construir el bienestar de los adultos mayores y que alcancen el equilibrio, es necesaria mucha paciencia, amor, darles las condiciones óptimas que aseguren su salud física y mental.

A veces somos indiferentes al grito de auxilio de los adultos mayores, pero es muy simple ayudarlos con una sonrisa, un abrazo, un “Te quiero”, envolverlos de buenas vibras para que alcancen la paz espiritual y salud mental que ellos necesitan. Hijos, dejen de lado las diferencias y viejos rencores que hayan tenido en algún momento de sus vidas con sus padres. Al pasado, pasado. Hagan felices a esos seres que les dieron la vida y amar. Sáquenlos de los encierros donde los tienen para que respiren el aire, sientan los rayos del sol. Dedíquenle un poco de su tiempo. Pues, para mañana quizás sea tarde.
