At exactly 1:00 AM, I woke up suddenly: no alarm, no noise, just a strange urgency in my spirit. What I saw moments later in the kitchen could have ended our lives …..
Anyone who lives in Lagos, Nigeria understands the daily struggle. From the ever-busy roads of Lagos Island to the crowded mainland, movement is a battle. The city is alive with energy: airports at Ikeja, seaports at Apapa, and endless commercial activity everywhere you turn. But behind this vibrancy lies a painful truth: traffic can drain the life out of you. Late Afro-beat Icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti is very right with his hit song “Suffering and Smiling”; that's Lagos for you.
On Saturday, April 4th, 2026, my friend Simon and I experienced it firsthand. What should have been a one-hour journey from Lagos Island to the mainland turned into a nine-hour ordeal. By the time we got home around 11:00 PM, we were completely exhausted.
We needed something quick, just to eat and sleep. Luckily, we had some burgers and fries. All that was missing was hot tea to complete the meal. Since I drove, I was more tired. I decided to lie down briefly while Simon handled the preparation. That decision almost cost us everything.

THE DANGEROUS MISTAKES: Unknown to me, Simon made two critical errors:
- He used an electric boiling ring to heat water inside a plastic jug.
- He fell asleep while the appliance was still on. Under normal conditions, the water should have boiled within 15 minutes. But we both slept… for over two hours.
THE SHOCKING DISCOVERY: I woke up suddenly around 1AM and rushed to the kitchen; what I saw was terrifying. The boiling ring was glowing red hot; smoke filled the air. The water had completely dried up and the plastic jug had melted beyond recognition. In that moment, instinct took over. I ran straight to the consumer control unit and switched off the electricity supply to the building. That single action prevented what could have been a devastating fire outbreak. After isolating the power, I returned to unplug the burnt appliance. We had escaped, just in time.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED (ENGINEERING EXPLANATION) From a safety standpoint, what happened was extremely dangerous. Electric boiling rings are designed to transfer heat to water. However, when the water dries up, there is no medium to absorb the heat; the coil temperature rises uncontrollably and the appliance begins to overheat. At this stage, the metal coil glows red hot (above safe temperature limits). The plastic jug begins to melt; at this stage, fire could be ignited. This is how many domestic fire outbreaks start…. silently and unexpectedly.

CRITICAL SAFETY LESSONS (PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE) This incident revealed dangerous habits many people practice daily:-
Never use plastic containers for boiling water; plastic is not designed to withstand high temperatures. It can melt, deform, and ignite.
Avoid using heating appliances without supervision; even a few minutes of negligence can lead to disaster.
Do not use appliances without automatic shut-off; devices without thermal control can overheat dangerously.
Never allow water to completely dry while heating; once dry, the heating element becomes a fire hazard.
Heating water in plastic can release toxic chemicals into the water, posing serious long-term health risks.
Always use heat-resistant containers such as stainless steel or electric kettles with auto cut-off.
There’s a saying: “If you make a monkey of electricity, electricity will make a monkey out of you.” That night, we understood it deeply. It was a narrow escape; if I hadn’t woken up when I did, this story could have ended very differently. We might not be here to tell it. Sometimes, it only takes one careless moment to destroy what took years to build. This is more than just a story; it’s a warning. Safety is not optional; it is survival.
