In the month of April, Sindarov has become the new challenger for 2026, as he will be playing Gukesh in the World Chess Championship later this year. It was a thing of wanting to get to the top five chess players with the highest rating, which he did. Then it was amazing to know that he moved from 2700 to 2775 in the space of January to April and that is truly impressive. For the first time in history, a 20 year old wins the Candidate tournament with the highest point ever accumulated and that is not all. This year's World Championship is going to the first of its kind with the youngest players ever.
The Candidate tournament took place in Cyprus with a double round robin format. It was an event with 8 players for both fields, male and female which made it a total of 14 rounds. It is not all about the prize money but the opportunity to become World Champion. The Candidates demands endurance and a high level of psychology to deal with the loses when they come but it is going to be more intense when it comes to the World Championship. More is at stake and it is 12 rounds of playing the same opponent.
Coming from the World Cup in 2025, I was not shocking to see Sindarov has what it takes to play on the elite level. He won the 2025 World Cup with a knockout setting. This gave him the qualification straight to the candidates and once that rollercoaster began, it never stopped for Sindarov. He was well composed with all level of gentle mannerisms down from the game, straight to press interview. Having the encouragement from his fans and friends made it even more comforting for him as he strived. One of the biggest highlights from the tournament was his games, from defeating the most likely player to win the event, Fabiano Caruana, down to not losing a single game in the event, which made it possible for him to win the tournament right from round 13, with one round to spare, which means if he did not play that round, he still wins the tournament, so it was no surprise that he went for a draw against Wei Yi.
Sindarov finished the tournament with a total of 10 points out of 14 games, which is a product of 6 wins and 8 draws. This is the most impressive result any player has gotten in a Candidate tournament. It also beats Ian's result of 9.5, which was the previous highest result. Another decisive moment for the Sindarov's tournament was in round 13, in his game against Anish Giri. The position was quite locked with zero means of winning for any side, while Sindarov held his ground with precision, I was impressed to see that there was nothing Anish Giri did not try inorder to get the win from Sindarov.
With the Candidates out of the way, all eyes will be on the upcoming World Championship which has two players that are under the age of 21, the youngest duo of all time. This speaks to how much the game of chess is growing, with so many young players doing exceptionally well. A young champion and now a younger world challenger. This means more to come for the future of chess and a Huge congratulations to Sindarov for an excellent performance at the Candidates.
