Virgen del Valle Church (Eng/Esp)

While touring the city and running some errands in the downtown area, I arrived at Avenida Perimetral; the bus ride was relatively quick, since there wasn’t much traffic in the afternoon. It had been a while since I’d been through this part of Cumana. They’re currently renovating the building across from the Virgen del Valle church. I also noticed that several businesses have changed their lines of business, and the old mural dedicated to María Rodriguez has given way to a new piece of art.

Virgen del Valle is the patron saint of the eastern part of the country; fishermen and sailors often entrust themselves to her when they set sail in their boats. Devotees and the faithful celebrate her feast day every September 8th; here in Cumaná, in addition to Mass, there are processions.

The Virgen del Valle Church is a very modest religious site with a simple, modern structure, making it a very welcoming place. The gardens are well-maintained, and from the outside you can see a beautifully crafted image of the Virgin Mary, featuring large white rocks in its design.

Also standing out at the top is a metal structure forming the image of the Virgin, which is illuminated at night and looks quite striking. This church has also become an important landmark because major city roads converge at its intersection.

I have attended Mass here on only a few occasions, but I can say with certainty that its architecture allows for ventilation that older churches—such as the Basilica of Santa Inés or Cumana Cathedral itself—lack. While these are imposing structures, their walls trap the heat, making daytime services somewhat uncomfortable.

Recorriendo la ciudad, realizando algunas diligencias por la zona céntrica, llegué a la Avenida Perimetral, el trayecto en autobús fue relativamente rápido, puesto que en horas de la tarde no había mucho tránsito. Tenía tiempo que no pasaba por esta parte de Cumaná, actualmente están remodelando el edificio que está frente a la iglesia Virgen del Valle, también observo que varios locales comerciales han cambiado de rubro y además el antiguo mural dedicado a María Rodríguez cedió paso a una nueva obra.

La Virgen del Valle es la patrona del oriente del país, los pescadores y marinos suelen encomendarse a ella cuando zarpan en sus botes. Los devotos y fieles celebran su festividad cada 8 de septiembre, acá en Cumaná, además de la misa se realizan procesiones.

La iglesia Virgen del Valle es un recinto religioso muy modesto, con una estructura moderna y sencilla, siendo un sitio muy acogedor. Los jardines están bien cuidados y desde la parte exterior se puede observar una imagen de la virgen muy bien lograda, en su diseño se distinguen enormes rocas blancas.

También se destaca en lo alto una estructura de metal que forma la imagen de la virgen, misma que es iluminada en la noche y luce bastante llamativa. Esta iglesia se ha convertido además en un punto de referencia importante porque en su cruce convergen vías importantes de la ciudad.

En contadas ocasiones he asistido a misas en este lugar, puedo decir con propiedad que su arquitectura permite una ventilación que no poseen templos más antiguos como la Basílica de Santa Inés o la misma Catedral de Cumaná, que son estructuras imponentes pero sus muros concentran el calor, siendo un tanto incómodas las ceremonias en horario diurno.
