How Strong Is Phlegmunculus in Splinterlands?

Hello Splinterlands warriors, how are you today? Hopefully the cards you bring into the arena always “click” with your strategy… and don’t just end up as expensive decorations in your lineup 😄
This time I want to talk about a monster that, honestly, when I first saw it… I was a bit confused about what it even was. But that weirdness is exactly what caught my attention.
Its name is Phlegmunculus.
Phlegmunculus is a monster from the Earth element, originating from the Divine Construct bloodline. And the first thing that made me raise an eyebrow was this: It only costs 2 mana, but it has two types of attacks: melee and ranged.

Seriously, 2 mana with two attack types? That’s like a buy-one-get-two deal.
Even at early levels, it’s already quite flexible. And once it gains the Close Range ability, it can still attack even when placed in the front position. Conceptually, it’s like a “mini hybrid attacker” that can fit into almost any team composition.

Now, what made me even more interested is its high-level ability:

Poison Burst. This skill activates when it dies:
- It applies Poison to the enemy that killed it
- It can even spread to nearby units
And we all know… poison in Splinterlands is brutal. Once applied, it keeps eating away HP every round.
So this isn’t a monster that needs to stay alive to be useful. Even in defeat… it can still “strike back.”
Battle Experience: Underestimated vs Reality
I once faced Phlegmunculus in a battle—but it was only level 1. And honestly… I won pretty easily.

At that moment, I thought: “Oh… this is just an average monster.”
You can watch the full battle here:
But after looking into it more deeply, I realized something important: I didn’t win because the card is weak, but because it wasn’t fully leveled yet.
Imagine if it already had Poison Burst:
- My attacking monster could immediately get poisoned
- The effect might spread to other units
- The battle could shift in the final rounds
That’s when I started to see its true potential.
Interesting Takeaways
Here are a few things that surprised me:
2 mana but multifunctional It’s rare to find a card this efficient.
Its value shows at higher levels It may feel average early on, but becomes dangerous when maxed.
A deadly death effect We often focus on keeping monsters alive, but some cards are strongest when they die.
Of course, it also has weaknesses:
- Low speed → often gets hit first
- Not much HP
- Needs upgrades to truly shine
If used carelessly, it’s just a filler card. But with proper intent… it can become a trap for your opponent.
Final Thoughts
To sum it up, Phlegmunculus is:
- a low-cost card with high potential
- seemingly weak at first, but dangerous at higher levels
- perfect for “trade value” strategies
In the end…
From my experience, Splinterlands is like chess. Sometimes you have to “sacrifice” a piece… to win the game.
And Phlegmunculus taught me one thing: even defeat can become a decisive final strike.
See you in the arena—and never underestimate small monsters… because they might just be the reason you lose 😄🔥
