Hello gente de Hive, espero que hayan tenido un buen fin de semana, por aquí estuve trabajando en un proyecto que aunque no está listo aún quise compartir con ustedes cómo voy, ya que no es un trabajo que pueda terminar rápido, y se trata de la restauración de los muebles para el cuarto de Miranda.

Este proyecto incluye la restauración y cambio de color de dos mesitas de noche, una cama matrimonial y una cómoda o peinadora, además de las puertas y repisas del closet de la habitación que estamos arreglando para nuestra hija, y el día de ayer comencé a trabajar en las mesitas de noche, que al igual que la cama tienen un estilo vintage que pertenecían a mis padres, y que tiene nada más y nada menos que 50 años, y como ven es de color blanco(que ya no luce blanco) con detalles azules, y lo que quiere mi hija es mantener el color blanco y cambiar el azul por lila.

This project involves restoring and repainting two bedside tables, a double bed and a chest of drawers or dressing table, as well as the doors and shelves of the wardrobe in the bedroom we’re refurbishing for our daughter, and yesterday I started working on the bedside tables, which, like the bed, are vintage pieces that belonged to my parents, and are no less than 50 years old. As you can see, they are white (though they no longer look white) with blue details, and what my daughter wants is to keep the white and change the blue to lilac.

Paso a paso/Step by step

Mi idea era terminar las dos mesitas por completo el fin de semana, pero era más trabajo del que yo pensaba, y claro que entre las ocupaciones del día a día no me dio tiempo, pero avancé bastante y lo primero que hice fue bajar las mesitas para trabajar en el porche, luego saqué las gavetas y con una esponja y detergente limpié muy bien las mesitas y las sequé con un pañito para comenzar a aplicar la primera capa de pintura con la brocha.

My plan was to finish both side tables completely over the weekend, but it turned out to be more work than I’d expected, and of course, with all my day-to-day commitments, I didn’t have time, but I did make good progress. The first thing I did was take the tables down to work on them on the porch, then I took out the drawers and, using a sponge and detergent, gave the tables a thorough clean and dried them with a cloth so I could start applying the first coat of paint with the brush.

Lo que decidí hacer es que inmediatamente después de pasar la brocha mojé solo un poco la esponja y la pasé sobre la pintura para eliminar las vetas que deja la brocha y para esto solo deslicé la esponja sobre la superficie en una misma dirección eliminando las marcas.

What I decided to do was, immediately after applying the brush, dampen the sponge just a little and run it over the paint to remove the brush marks; to do this, I simply slid the sponge across the surface in the same direction to remove the marks.

Una vez que se logran eliminar las vetas, con la misma esponja dí toques suaves por toda la superficie hasta eliminar todas las marcas que quedaban y este trabajo lo hice en todos los lados de la mesita, realizándolo por las distintas piezas, una la vez, porque la idea es pasar la esponja cuando aún la pintura está fresca y se puedan eliminar las vetas.

Once the streaks have been removed, use the same sponge to gently dab the entire surface until all remaining marks have been eliminated. I did this on all sides of the side table, working on each section one at a time, because the idea is to use the sponge whilst the paint is still wet so that the streaks can be removed.

Este proceso lo realicé dos veces en cada mesita para cubrirlas muy bien, y entre capa y capa mientras se secaban aproveché de trabajar con las gavetas, las que pinté todas de blanco para "matar" el color azul marino de la parte delanterade las gavetas.

Y lo que hice fue retirar los tiradores y luego las pinté tanto por fuera como por dentro, pero solo con la brocha, ya que como van pintadas de color lila, puedo lijar un poco antes de aplicarla.

I repeated this process twice on each side table to ensure they were thoroughly covered, and between coats, whilst they were drying, I took the opportunity to work on the drawers, which I painted entirely white to "neutralise" the navy blue colour on the front of the drawers.

What I did was remove the handles and then paint them both inside and out, but only with a brush, as they are already painted lilac, so I can sand them down a little before applying the paint.

Justo al momento de escribirles este post tengo pintadas de blanco las dos mesitas junto con sus gavetas, y pasaré a trabajar con las piezas de la cama en el transcurso de la semana, que igualmente las pintaré todas de blanco para luego aplicar el lila en el espaldar y a medida que haga avances significativos les paso a contar cómo va este proceso de restauración.

De momento las mesitas no parecieran que tuviesen 50 años y una vez estén terminadas estoy segura que se verán hermosas, tanto por la combinación de colores como por el trabajo que pienso hacer en las gavetas, que por supuesto no se los contaré hoy, así que estén atentos para saber cómo termina todo.

As I write this post, I’ve just finished painting the two bedside tables and their drawers white, and I’ll be moving on to the bed frame later this week. I’ll be painting all the bed frame parts white too, before applying the lilac to the headboard. As I make significant progress, I’ll let you know how this restoration process is going.

At the moment, the bedside tables don’t look like they’re 50 years old, and once they’re finished, I’m sure they’ll look beautiful, both because of the colour combination and the work I plan to do on the drawers – which, of course, I won’t be telling you about today – so stay tuned to find out how it all turns out.
