Hello gente! Hoy tampoco hay receta, y es que he estado tan distraída con mi labor de bricolaje que no me he dedicado a hacer gran cosa en la cocina, con decirles que hoy almorzamos perros calientes 🤣, pero eso sí terminé las mesitas de noche y adelanté una de las piezas de la cama, así que valió la pena el tomarme el tiempo porque de verdad estoy feliz y mi niña mucho más.
Hello everyone! No recipe today either – I’ve been so distracted by my DIY project that I haven’t got round to doing much in the kitchen. Suffice to say, we had hot dogs for lunch today 🤣. But I did finish the bedside tables and made a head start on one of the bed frames, so it was worth taking the time because I’m really happy with them, and my little girl is even happier.
Como les comenté ayer, las mesitas de noche estaban completamente pintadas de blanco y lo que tenía pendiente era darles un toque especial, y es justo lo que les comparto hoy, ya que les apliqué un falso decapado que le quedó súper lindo y combina a la perfección con el estilo vintage de las mesitas.
Ahora bien, ¿Qué es el decapado? Es una técnica que se utiliza para pintar muebles y darle una apariencia envejecida, y consiste en pintar por capas, generalmente en dos tonos, para luego lijar algunas partes de la pieza dejando ver la pintura del fondo, creando de esta forma una apariencia desgastada o envejecida que es característica del estilo shabby chic.
As I mentioned yesterday, the bedside tables were already painted entirely white, and all that was left to do was give them a special touch – which is exactly what I’m sharing with you today, as I applied a distressed finish that looks absolutely lovely and goes perfectly with the tables’ vintage style.
Now then, what is distressing? It’s a technique used to paint furniture and give it an aged look, and it involves painting in layers, usually in two shades, and then sanding down certain parts of the piece to reveal the paint underneath, thus creating a worn or aged appearance that is characteristic of the shabby chic style.
En mi caso, yo decidí hacer un falso decapado porque aunque había pintado de blanco las gavetas y las iba a pintar luego de lila, debajo de toda esta pintura estaba el azul marino y al lijar iba a aparecer este color, y por supuesto no quería eso, así que usé esta técnica que consiste en pintar sobre el color base y retirar con un paño húmedo, y aunque no queda tal cual el decapado, queda muy lindo.
Y ahora sí, veamos cómo fue el proceso y los materiales que utilicé.
In my case, I decided to go for a distressed look because, although I’d painted the drawers white and was going to paint them lilac next, underneath all that paint was navy blue, and sanding them would have brought that colour to the surface – and of course I didn’t want that, so I used this technique, which involves painting over the base colour and wiping it off with a damp cloth; and although it doesn’t look exactly like a stripped finish, it looks really nice.
And now, let’s take a look at the process and the materials I used.

Paso a paso/Step by step
Como les comenté arriba en el decapado se usan dos capas de colores diferentes, para luego lijar algunas zonas de la pieza y dejar al descubierto la pintura de fondo, pero como les dije, yo usaré el falso decapado y como ya las gavetas estaban pintadas de blanco para "matar" el color azul marino que tenían, el siguiente paso era pintar con el lila y cubrir la tapa frontal de la gaveta.
Para esto decidí utilizar un pincel de cerdas finas, ya que así evitaría marcas en la pieza.
As I mentioned earlier, the distressed finish involves applying two coats of different colours, then sanding down certain areas of the piece to reveal the underlying paint; but as I said, I’ll be using the faux distressing technique, and as the drawers were already painted white to “neutralise” the navy blue they originally had, the next step was to paint them lilac and cover the front of the drawer.
For this, I decided to use a fine-bristled brush, as this would prevent marks on the piece.

I applied three coats of paint to each drawer, allowing them to dry thoroughly between coats, and once they were completely dry, they were ready for the next step, which is applying the faux distressed finish
Para este acabado lo que hice fue cargar el pincel con la pintura blanca (sin exagerar) y pasar rápidamente por toda la superficie de la gaveta y de inmediato pasé el paño húmedo en una misma dirección para retirar el exceso de pintura y gracias a eso podemos ver zonas tanto blancas como lila, lo que nos da la idea de que se ha caído la pintura en algunas zonas, creando un aspecto envejecido.
To achieve this finish, I loaded the brush with white paint (without overdoing it) and quickly swept it across the entire surface of the drawer. I then immediately wiped it with a damp cloth in the same direction to remove the excess paint. As a result, we can see both white and lilac areas, which gives the impression that the paint has flaked off in places, creating an aged look.
En este punto las gavetas ya están listas, y lo único que nos falta es colocar los tiradores a los que también les di un toque especial pintándolos de blanco para luego lijarlos en algunas zonas y listo, los incorporé a las gavetas, las coloqué en la mesita de noche, y de esta forma termina la restauración de las mesitas de noche para la habitación de Miri.
At this stage, the drawers are ready, and all that’s left to do is fit the handles – which I’ve also given a special touch by painting them white and then sanding them down in places – and that’s it. I fitted them to the drawers, placed them on the bedside table, and that completes the restoration of the bedside tables for Miri’s bedroom.
Como pueden ver es una técnica bastante sencilla, que le aporta muchísimo carácter a las mesitas de noche, y sobre todo le da ese toque romántico que junto con el estilo vintage del mueble hacen un match perfecto que convierte en estas mesitas en dignas representantes del estilo shabby chic.
As you can see, it’s a fairly simple technique that adds a lot of character to the bedside tables, and above all gives them that romantic touch which, combined with the furniture’s vintage style, makes for a perfect match that turns these tables into true representatives of the shabby chic style.
