Being selfish is simply being considerate of oneself alone and never concerned with how one's actions affect others. Being selfish is when a person is concerned only with their own pleasure and profit, even if it disrupts the peace of others.
The Gospel of Jesus teaches us to love others as we love ourselves, meaning that what we want for ourselves should be what we want for the next person. We canโt do things when we know that the outcome of it will affect the next person negatively. Being selfish sometimes is being toxic, when we refuse to put in mind the feelings of others, he or she tends to lose all humanity.
Positive selfishness on the other hand is healthy selfishness where your act and response to the world allows you to be useful. A positive selfishness tells us to help ourselves first so that we could be helpful to others, A person who is not strong for instance should tend to themselves first before tending to another sick person.
People have tend to misunderstand the concept of positive selfishness acting and doing all that sorts them, not thinking of how it affects the next person all in the name of self care. An investment in yourself may take time away from family and friends but on a long run, you become more useful to them, bringing back more value and benefits to them. Any act that results to someone else's lost is a negative selfishness and not a positive selfishness, a positive selfishness returns positive outcome and never a negative one.
A selfishness that is built on subtraction is not a positive selfishness. For me to gain, you must lose. For me to have "peace," I must ignore your distress. It is where humanity starts to erode because it views other people as obstacles rather than neighbors.
Positive selfishness is built on investment. I take time away now (subtraction) to build a greater capacity (addition) that eventually benefits the whole community (multiplication). People hide under positive selfishness labeling it as "self care" justifying bad behaviour.
If a person uses "self-care" to avoid responsibility indefinitely, they are slipping into the negative side. But if a person uses "self-care" to heal so they can return to their post with more empathy and energy, they are practicing the "positive selfishness". The difference is hiding from the world and preparing for the world.
