My Visit to San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle (Eng/Esp)

One of the most iconic tourist attractions in the city of Cumaná is the Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia. I had the opportunity to visit it with my family during Holy Week, taking advantage of the fact that the site would be open to the public for a full tour; although I had been to this fortress several times before, I had always found certain areas—such as the main terrace, guard posts, and dungeons—closed off.

The castle is an example of very old architecture dating back to the 17th century. It remains standing today because the materials used in its construction are very durable and of excellent quality. Additionally, the sea has receded considerably from the shore, which is why this building still stands as an important example of the colonial era and, of course, represents the country’s cultural and historical heritage.

The features that tend to attract the most attention—especially from visitors—are the enormous cannons strategically placed throughout the site: one in the plaza to welcome visitors, and the others atop the structure. This serves as a reminder that the castle was designed as a military fortress whose primary purpose was to protect the city of Cumaná from pirates, invaders, and other enemies attacking by sea.

What I enjoyed most about this tour was the wonderful view of the city; everything looks very small and in perfect harmony, as if I had a drone to capture aerial images. From this vantage point, you can also appreciate the four-pointed design, pointing toward each cardinal direction, which provides a greater visual command of the entire area. I stood at the highest point, observing the vastness of the sky and the peace that permeates this place, isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city.

I took advantage of my stay to visit the Polvorín, a small underground storage facility that was used to store gunpowder. Entering this space was amazing; there was little light, which came from outside. Everything looked gloomy, and my thoughts drifted back to the colonial era. It also crossed my mind that there were underground tunnels in the castle connecting to various sites in the historic district.

Walking through this place with my family marked a milestone where three generations have come together. I took the opportunity to snap a few photos; Alma was happily running all over the place. She imagined she was a little soldier and made a sound with her mouth that resembled a cannon firing: boom, boom—it was really funny.

Uno de los lugares turísticos más emblemáticos de la ciudad de Cumaná es el Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia. Tuve la ocasión de visitarlo junto a mi familia en la Semana Santa, aprovechando que las instalaciones estarían abiertas al público para realizar el recorrido completo puesto que a pesar de estar en esta fortaleza varias veces, siempre la encontré cerrada en algunos niveles como la terraza principal, garitas y calabozos.

El castillo es una muestra de arquitectura muy antigua que data del siglo XVII, actualmente se mantiene en pie pues los materiales que se usaron en su construcción son muy resistentes y de excelente calidad, además el mar se alejó considerablemente de la orilla, de allí que esta edificación permanezca aún como muestra importante de la época colonial y por supuesto represente un patrimonio cultural e histórico del país.

Los elementos que suelen llamar más la atención, sobre todo de los visitantes, son los enormes cañones distribuidos de forma estratégica, uno en la plaza dando la bienvenida y los demás en lo alto de la estructura, lo cual nos recuerda que el castillo fue diseñado como una fortaleza militar cuyo propósito primordial era proteger a la ciudad de Cumaná de piratas, invasores y otros enemigos que ataquen vía naval.

Lo que más disfruté de este recorrido fue la vista maravillosa que se tiene de la ciudad, todo luce muy diminuto y en perfecta armonía, tal como si tuviera un Dron para capturar imágenes áreas. Desde esta mirada también se puede apreciar el diseño de cuatro puntas, apuntando a cada eje cardinal, así se tiene un mayor dominio visual de todo. Estuve en el punto más alto, observando la inmensidad del cielo y la paz que se respira aquí, en un sitio aislado del bullicio citadino.

Aproveché mi estancia para visitar el Polvorín, un pequeño almacen subterráneo que se utilizaba para la pólvora. Entrar en este espacio fue genial, había poca iluminación, la cual venía del exterior. Todo lucía lúgubre y el pensamiento me llevó a la época colonial, también cruzó por mi mente los comentarios de que en el castillo existían túneles subterráneos que comunicaban con varios sitios ubicados en el casco histórico.

Caminar con mi familia por este lugar fue marcar un referente donde han convergido tres generaciones. Aproveché para tomar algunas fotografías, Alma estaba feliz corriendo por todas partes. Incluso imaginaba que era una pequeña militar y con su boca realizaba un sonido similar al de disparar un cañón: pum, pum, fue muy gracioso.
