Third place: Why we keep coming back
~Third Place Series~
Part I
This is a small note about the third place.
Between home and routine, there is a third space we often seek without even realizing it.
A simple place where we can pause for a moment—without demands, without roles—and slowly return to being ourselves.
Here, third place refers more to a phenomenon that has been increasingly visible lately: the rapid growth of coffee shops everywhere.

Coffee and Feelings
Have you ever felt like your heart is heavy, your mind is full, and there’s an uncomfortable feeling you can’t quite explain?
Work feels cold.
Home feels too narrow.
Your heart feels empty and lost.
The need for presence pushes us to keep searching for a space where we can simply feel present.
Coffee shops seem to fill that emptiness—not because we need coffee, but because we need a place.
We All Have a “Third Space”
There is a simple concept that holds deep meaning for many people.
The first place is home.
The second place is our environment—such as school or work.
And in between, there is a third place:
A place where we are not required to be anything.
A place where we can be silent without having to explain ourselves.
A place where we can feel calm and simply exist without playing a role.
In the past, third places could be parks, front porches, small food stalls, or other humble spaces. But now, it feels like many of those spaces have been taken over by coffee shops.
Coffee Shops Are More Than Just Coffee
Most of us are already familiar with the atmosphere of a coffee shop.
We come, sit down with a laptop open—or just put on earphones while slowly sipping an iced latte.
People come and go.
Coffee machines hum throughout the room.
Faint conversations blend into the background, creating a strangely comforting atmosphere.
And somehow, we feel calmer and more at ease compared to other places.
Why?
Because coffee shops offer something we rarely notice—but deeply need:
A sense of presence without pressure
Solitude without loneliness
Crowds without the need to engage
We are not completely alone, yet we are not required to participate in intense interactions.
We Don’t Always Come for the Coffee
If we pause and reflect, there are times when we go to a coffee shop not because we want coffee—but because we want to escape for a while.
Escape from thoughts.
Escape from routines.
Escape from feelings that are hard to explain.
As mentioned before, maybe we are not hungry—we are simply tired.
Coffee is just an excuse.
We think we go there to enjoy coffee.
But honestly, we could brew coffee at home—much cheaper than buying it at a café.
And yet… we still go.
We sit there for hours.
We order just one cup, sometimes not even finishing it.
Why?
Because what we are really looking for is:
A space to breathe
A place to be silent without questions
An environment that doesn’t demand us to be anything
Third Place Is an Emotional Space
A third place is not just physical—it is an emotional space.
A place where we feel safe enough to pause.
A place where we don’t have to appear productive.
A place where we can be ourselves—even in silence.
What Are We Really Looking For?
Maybe it’s not coffee.
Not just Wi-Fi.
Not even the aesthetic atmosphere.
Maybe what we are searching for is a space where we can pause—feeling safe from a world that keeps moving too fast.
And that is one of the reasons why we keep coming back.
Closing
The rapid spread of coffee shops everywhere reminds us that this is not just a lifestyle trend.
It reflects something much deeper—a fundamental human need:
The need for safety and comfort.
