Sweetness, Mood, and Why We Feel More Tired After
Have you ever felt very tired, and suddenly wanted a sweet milk coffee, chocolate, or a slice of cake?
Then without thinking too much, we start eating it.
But some time later, instead of feeling more energetic, we actually become sleepier, weaker, and find it harder to focus.
Strange, isn’t it? We were looking for energy, but what came instead was more fatigue.
Maybe the problem is not that we lack sugar. Maybe we are just tired, and sugar only gives a small pause, not a solution
Sweetness, Mood, and Heavy Days
Sometimes there are days when everything feels heavy.
Work keeps piling up, the weather is hot, traffic is terrible, or maybe we just suddenly feel sad for no clear reason.
On days like that, sweet food feels like a good friend. A glass of iced milk coffee feels like a small gift for ourselves. As if sugar could fix a bad day.
And for the first few minutes, we do feel better. Calmer. More comfortable. Slightly happier.
That is why sweet food is often called comfort food — not because we are hungry, but because we want to feel better
Does Sugar Really Improve Mood?
Interestingly, scientific research shows something quite surprising.
A meta-analysis of 31 studies about sugar and mood found that sugar does not improve mood at all. In fact, it makes people more tired and less focused within about an hour after consuming it.
So what we often call a “sugar rush” is most likely just a psychological feeling, not real energy from sugar.
The tired feeling after eating sweets is often called a sugar crash, a condition where energy drops after a spike in blood sugar. The symptoms can include:
Sleepiness
Brain fog
Difficulty focusing
Weakness Feeling hungry again
So sugar is actually like an energy roller coaster — fast up, fast down
Maybe We’re Not Hungry, Just Tired
Sometimes we think we need food. But maybe what we actually need is:
Rest Sleep Water A short walk Talking to someone Time for ourselves
Sugar often becomes the fastest escape when we are mentally tired, not physically hungry.
We don’t always eat because our body needs energy. Sometimes we eat because our heart needs comfort.
How to Avoid Sugar Crash
This doesn’t mean we cannot eat sweet food. We can still enjoy milk coffee, chocolate, or cake.
But maybe we can try a few things:
Don’t eat sweets on an empty stomach Combine sweets with protein or fat (coffee + nuts, bread + eggs) Drink water after eating sweets Get enough sleep Reduce sweet drinks, not eliminate them completely
Because the goal is not to live without sugar. The goal is not to depend on sugar for energy and mood
Sweet food is not always bad.
Sometimes it becomes a friend on a heavy day and it becomes a small reward after a long day.
~~ But
Sometimes what we need is not sweet coffee,
Not chocolate
Not cake
Sometimes what we need is to sleep earlier, pause for a moment, or give ourselves time to breathe.
So maybe we need to remember one simple thing:
Not all tiredness can be solved with sugar.
