Attending a Halal Bi Halal Event Featuring a Variety of traditional dishes

Halal bi halal is a tradition observed by many Indonesians. This gathering typically takes place after Eid al-Fitr, and its main purpose is to come together to strengthen bonds and enjoy the various dishes prepared by the host.
One of my friends invited us last week, and you’ve probably seen my posts from her house before. But today was different—we gathered together and also livened up the event with a fresh atmosphere. We planned it in our WhatsApp group before the event, and the idea came up to rent decorations for the occasion. We designed the theme as beautifully as possible in the outdoor garden of my friend’s house. With uniquely themed decor in sage, cream, and yellow.

The decor turned out absolutely beautiful; here, we’ll relax and create content. Yeah, many of my friends are content creators on various social media platforms, so moments like this need to be executed as perfectly as possible. We rented the decor together, and the result was stunning—I loved it so much. We even wore outfits that matched the decor so the photos would turn out perfectly.

The arrangement is very neat, and I think this will be the most beautiful moment of the event—the lights and floral decorations are truly enchanting. And what I like most are the sweet pastel colors that are a delight to the eyes. The price of this decoration is quite high, but in my opinion, it’s well worth it—the result is truly satisfying.

I also reunited with @ryanaa , who has been my best friend since college, and she had already posted about our previous meeting on the Hive platform a few days ago. We actually met last Sunday, but I’ve been so busy that I only found the time to edit and write this today.

Well, a Halal bi Halal gathering wouldn’t feel complete without a variety of dishes.Events like this are all about feasting—there’s a wide variety of dishes on the table. I absolutely love how the food is presented at my friend’s house; it’s truly that aesthetically pleasing. That’s why, if I don’t take photos and save all the food pictures while I’m there, I feel like something’s missing. Even though Ryanaa had already shared some of our event earlier. But I went back because I loved the food there so much—I just had to share my own wonderful experiences and memories from my time there.
Early that morning, before the event began, my friend had already prepared the main course. I was actually asked to come early to help my friend before everyone else arrived. Since I happened to have nothing else to do, I asked my husband to drive me there a little earlier.
Lontong Sayur

Lontong sayur is a rice dish that’s been simmered for a long time and wrapped in banana leaves, resulting in a delicious, firm rice cake. This lontong is typically enjoyed with coconut milk broth, also known as sayur lodeh, and served with various side toppings.

It just wouldn’t feel complete to serve lontong with just the sauce and noodles; it’s typically served with green chili shrimp paste, hard-boiled eggs, thin noodles, and most specially, with beef rendang and beef curry.

The dish is truly special; I actually arrived early that day on purpose to help my friend—from boiling the noodles, slicing the lontong, to plating it on serving dishes—so that by the time my other friends arrived, everything would be ready.

That afternoon, after everything was done, my friend and I tasted the lontong. I added all the available side dishes because I had planned to try them all. And last but not least, there were Mustafa potatoes in this jar—they’re absolutely the best when paired with vegetable lontong.
The result was truly amazing; the lontong was delicious, even though it was my friend’s first time making it—it turned out incredible. The flavor was savory and spicy; the rendang was rich, and the tauco’s spiciness was perfectly balanced on the tongue when mixed with the lodeh vegetables—it was truly amazing.
After everyone gathered that afternoon, our nasi tumpeng order arrived. The moment I saw it, I immediately loved it. Everything was arranged so neatly—the rice was neatly layered, and the packaging was secure to ensure it arrived safely at the venue. Yeah, just as expected, the rice was still intact, and all the garnishes were kept safe.

Nasi Tumpeng

Once the plastic was opened, wow, I was absolutely amazed by how beautiful it looked—the tumpeng rice was absolutely perfect. We ordered liwet rice with a special portion for 10 people.

This liwet rice came with a variety of side dishes: galangal-fried chicken, shrimp with sambal, fried noodles, rolled omelet, and tempeh with anchovy sambal.

All the dishes were very complete and tasted delicious; everything was perfect when I scooped some of the dishes onto my plate and tasted them—they were all delicious and perfect. My other friends also said the menu was simple yet delicious.
I really loved the garnish—cucumber and carrot slices—which created such a beautiful decoration on the tumpeng. I even took a photo of it and plan to try making this liwet rice with the same garnish at home someday. I hope I can pull it off.

Kweni Salad and Tekwan

Rujak kweni is a new dessert for me; this is the first time I’ve tried it, and I fell in love with it right away. This dish is truly that delicious—spicy, sweet, and tangy all in one. The rujak is absolutely amazing, packed with a variety of fresh, sliced fruits. It features salak, papaya, aple, kolangkaling, pinneaple, guava, jicama, and mango, all drizzled with a mango kweni sauce and seasoned with spicy chili peppers. I thought it was so delicious that I had to enjoy it twice—it was that good.

This kweni rujak was intentionally ordered; it’s one of the viral rujak dishes from my friend’s homemade business. She really knows how to pick dishes—from main courses to desserts, everything is delicious.
Tekwan has indeed become a staple dish at my friend’s house; she makes it very often and usually serves it in broth. Tekwan is similar to meatballs, but it’s made from sago flour combined with fish or chicken.

My friend’s version of tekwan is truly unbeatable—it tastes amazing when paired with wood ear mushrooms, and the result looks absolutely beautiful. I absolutely love the broth in tekwan; it’s rich and savory, cooked with celery, and the spices really come through.

I served myself just one bowl—no need for too much, since there are still plenty of other dishes to try. Besides that, tekwan is usually served with boiled rice noodles and fried shallots—it all comes together perfectly..
A Variety of Snacks and Syrup Drinks
This drink is very simple and straightforward; I really love the sweet combination of Kurnia syrup, a red variety that’s extremely popular in Indonesia. Served over ice and enjoyed cold, it’s truly delicious—the sweetness is just right. Just don’t overdo it, though, because it might make you feel sick.

These brownies, made by Brownies Amanda, are really popular. I absolutely love the taste—it’s sweet but not cloying. The texture is incredibly soft, not hard at all, and very moist.

I prefer the lighter chocolate variety, which also has a softer color. There’s another variety that’s black, but I’m not exactly sure what kind of brownie that is. However, it tastes really good too—uhh, this particular brownie is s

Last but not least, the marble cheesecake—this one was brought by my friend. It’s also really delicious; unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the inside, which has a lovely texture and is so brightly colored.

Since we hired a photographer for our group photo, I forgot to take a group photo with my own phone. So I used a photo from my friend’s phone—I’ve already asked for their permission. To commemorate this moment, it just wouldn’t feel complete without posting a group photo. The photos turned out beautifully—the outfits, the decorations, everything was absolutely perfect—and the food was all delicious; I highly recommend everything.
May this friendship last forever, right through to our old age. It feels so wonderful to get together with friends—even though we each have our own families now, our bonds remain strong.
