We look down the road at milestones and contemplate. “What are we going to do when we get here?” We don’t “have” to do anything. We just like sharing our wacky ideas to dis-cover our like-minded vibe tribe.

We “predict,” that there will never (strong word), be a time in this realm when humans will not be vulnerable to a cult, a club, a society, a gild, a political party, a religion, an influencer. a dogma, or some kind of system that manipulates and controls behavior. This is an inherent consequence of living in the “grit.” The material world.

Very few are truly self-sufficient. Even the hermit has to eat, or die. Hunt, gather, or be hunted, or eaten in the wild. Remember that movie? “Into the Wild,” I think it was.

Contradictions are woven into every “truth.” Safety in numbers, deteriorates into the dangers of the crowd. Especially for the non-conformist. Leave an abusive home. Join an abusive cult. There’s really no way out, and no one gets out alive.

Solutions? Strategies?

The eye of the storm. It’s not for everyone. Humanity and all its wants, needs, attachments, righteousness, desires and emotions. That’s the storm. That’s the pressure any human faces. Often they are born into it and if not they get sucked, (or pushed), into it early. It’s difficult to escape. Perpetual motion. Expectations of elevation generate concerns, then fears, then dread, about falling. Falling? Back into the “class” from which you have ascended.

At any given time, we speculate, there are countless “cults,” (by any other name), somewhere around. There’s one with your name on it.

The Next Cult. As usual, today’s bit rolled out in expectedly unexpected directions. It’s a cybornetic journey that may enlighten and disrupt simultaneously. It’s synchronicitous.
I’ve heard it so many times, I almost believe it. Humans can only, “decode” (by sight), “naught-point-naught-naught five percent,” as David Icke puts it, of “reality.” Okay. What do we not see. Well, for starters, I don’t see the noise that’s emanating from outside my window. And I don’t see the smell of the cigarette addicts who shouldn’t be smoking in the courtyard. I don’t see heatwaves, except sometimes on the road. But I don’t really see the heat. I see the results of the heat. We don’t see light. Only reflected light. There’s a lot that we don’t see, (unless you’re a synesthesiac), for which your humble vagabond is grateful.
David Icke, given credibility and support by MI 6, would have made an interesting cult leader. He’s got many of the classic attributes. Charismatic. A polished presenter, having once worked for the BBC. Articulate and confident. And, he has had many a psychic experience. He’s got the power of his convictions, and he’s been referred to at a “nutter” by “authority.” Plus, he’s authored many books. Twenty in total, according to sources familiar with his catalog. The ideas within this anthology could be easily compiled into something that might rival the Christian Bible. The world is overdue for a new Sun Deity. The English-speaking Christian-indoctrinated world is ripe for a new cult. The lecherous African clergy notwithstanding. We predict, in this episode in particular, (but we’ve been covering this for decades), that “The Next Cult” will be an intersection of Science & Spirituality, “Spirit-Science”, if you will. “Spirit-Science,” as far as we can discern, is science that “proves” spirituality. The “proof” component has been the “missing link” when science looks at spirituality, and, when spirituality looks at science. We decoded this digital road map in our first year in the Stacks. It hasn’t subsided. Indeed it has multiplied. Scams, swindles and confidence games come and go, but the players, at least in personality abstracts, remain fairy consistent. The same types drawn to “hazard” in the Middle Ages, are drawn to the “craps” tables today. Although I don’t like to hear or use the term, “hard wired” when referring to humans, “inherent” doesn’t hit hard enough when describing the distinctly human inability to free themselves from their mental prisons.
In any case, we love the human herd. It’s like watching Gilligan’s Island decade after decade. Every ten years they switch out all the actors, but they still wear the same costumes, eat coconut-something everyday, live in huts and sleep on hammocks. And they are never getting off of that island. Here are our top 7 Characteristics of the 21st Century Cult Leader. (Bot-Generated.)

Unlike the fire-and-brimstone prophets of the past, today's cult leader has evolved. They are no longer fringe figures shouting from a street corner. Instead, they are polished, digitally native, and often indistinguishable from lifestyle gurus, motivational speakers, or CEOs. Their power lies not in otherworldly mystery, but in curated accessibility.

The 21st Century Cult Leader.

The modern cult leader is defined by a paradoxical blend of hyper-availability and absolute control. They have traded the compound for the cloud, and the robe for the designer blazer. Their authority is no longer derived solely from claimed divine revelation, but from a carefully engineered persona of "authentic" success, vulnerability, and relentless positivity.

1. The Algorithmic Prophet (Digital Native).
   They master technology not just as a tool, but as an extension of their influence. Using social media, podcasts, and private streaming channels, they bypass traditional gatekeepers.

2. Therapeutic Tyranny (Lifestyle Guru). They cloak control in the language of self-improvement. Instead of "obey me," they say "do the work." Instead of "cut ties with non-believers," they say "protect your energy from toxic people."

3. Curated Vulnerability (The Relatable Messiah). Unlike the distant, fearsome leaders of the past, the 21st century leader performs vulnerability. They share their "dark nights of the soul," their therapy journeys, their failures, and their "raw" moments on camera. This disarms critical thinking.

4. The Commercial Cloak (The Prosperity Pivot). They hide behind a legitimate-looking business structure. There is an app, a subscription tier, a merchandise line, a "mastermind" group costing thousands, or a cryptocurrency token.

5. Narcissistic Spirituality (Self-Deification Lite). They rarely claim to be God directly. Instead, they claim to have unlocked a "frequency," a "dimensional shift," or a "secret science" that only they can interpret.

6. Isolation Through Inclusion (The Love Bomb Loop). Physical compounds are less common; instead, isolation is psychological and social. The leader encourages the follower to cut off "negative influences" (family, old friends) and pour all time into the group's online forums, retreats, and work calls.

7. The Unaccountable Healer (The Rejection of Institutions). They position themselves above all formal systems of accountability. Doctors are "pill pushers," therapists are "system agents," and journalists are "liars." When a follower is harmed (financially, physically, or sexually), the leader reframes it as the follower's lack of faith, poor execution of the method, or karmic debt. The leader is never wrong; reality is wrong.

Now here’s the flipside. We have not forgotten you. Those who fuel the Cult Engine. 7 Characteristics of the 21st Century Cult Follower.

The Willing Captive.

The 21st century cult follower is not a destitute, uneducated outcast. Psychographically, they are often affluent, educated, and ideologically hungry.

1. The Educated Seeker.
   This is the most counterintuitive trait. Modern cult followers are often over-educated. They hold bachelor's or graduate degrees in humanities, social sciences, or even hard sciences. Their critical thinking skills are intact, but they have been trained to deconstruct everything except their own emotional needs.

2. The Chronically Disconnected.
   They have 1,000 online "friends" but no one to call at 3 AM. They are masters of digital performance but amateurs at genuine vulnerability. They are desperate for a group that demands they show up, not just like a post.

3. The Burned-Out Idealist.
   Many were once passionate about politics, charity, environmentalism, or social justice. They tried "the system" and got exhausted, disillusioned, or cynical. They move from wanting to change society to wanting to change themselves under a leader who promises immediate, tangible results (peace, wealth, enlightenment).

4. The Anxious Achiever.
   Outwardly successful, inwardly terrified. They have the money for a $10,000 "mastermind" retreat. They have the CV for a leadership role. But they feel like impostors. The follower pays not for information, but for the relief of being told exactly what to do. Choice is their enemy; the leader's voice is their sedative.

5. The Spiritual Orphan.
   They were raised in a rigid religion (or a chaotic non-religious home) and rejected it. But they never filled the void. They miss the certainty, the rituals, the community. They won't return to traditional religion, but they will join a "high-performance coaching group" or a "wellness collective" that has the exact same hierarchy, confessionals, and salvation narratives, just with new vocabulary. They are converts looking for a cathedral without the cross.

6. The Isolation-Prone.
   They have few local, multigenerational anchors. They move cities for work. They are not married, or are divorced. Their parents live far away. This demographic mobility is a vulnerability. The cult becomes their surrogate family because there is no competing family to pull them back.

7. The Thrill-Seeker of Transcendence.
   They are bored by moderate religion, moderate politics, and moderate relationships. They want ecstasy, revelation, and transformation. They have tried drugs, extreme sports, or chaotic romances. The cult offers a sustainable (and socially approved) form of intensity. Peace would bore them. Chaos feels like purpose.

We may “think” that we are predicting the rise of The Next Cult, however in actually we are probably already too late. We have been looking at 21st century cults through our 20th century lens. We are thinking “Jim Jones” & Heaven’s Gate, when we should be thinking “Andrew Tate” and Tipping Point USA. And any podcast that is targeting the above profiles. Maybe The Next Cult is more of an industry than a cult. Modeled more on a corporation and a religion. (Not much difference.)

Maybe The Next Cult will be the Cult of the Full Metal Ox. (It has a nose-ring to it.)
