"Outwitting the Devil"
Napoleon Hill’s least known work is probably his most controversial book. So much so in fact it was suppressed for several generations of Hill’s descendants. It wasn’t until the lineage was, exhausted, the passing of Hill’s nephew’s wife that, “Outwitting the Devil” passed into the control of the Napoleon Hill Foundation through which the title was published in 2011, some 70 years after Hill’s demise. Penned in 1938, "Outwitting the Devil" is structured as a fictional interview between Napoleon Hill (called "Mr. Earthbound") and the Devil ("Your Majesty"). The "Devil" is a metaphor for negative forces like fear, doubt, procrastination, and self-sabotage that keep people trapped in a state of "drifting", that is, living without purpose or direction, or as we like to call it, “dharma”.
Hill distinguishes between drifters (the 98% of people the Devil controls) and non-drifters (the 2% who master their own minds). Drifters are vulnerable to fear, superstition, greed, and laziness, while non-drifters maintain, "definiteness of purpose" and self-mastery. The book outlines seven principles for escaping drifting: definiteness of purpose, self-mastery, learning from adversity, controlling environmental influences, using time wisely, achieving harmony, and practicing caution.
A central concept is the "law of hypnotic rhythm", the idea that repeated thoughts and actions become automatic habits, whether positive or negative. This is similar to our “Seven Daily Wins”. I wonder if Ole Nappy downloaded this into our Simulation. The Devil's primary weapon is fear: fear of poverty, criticism, illness, loss, aging, and death. Exactly the weapons we resist daily. Particulary in “Abundance Year.”
The manuscript was suppressed for decades due to its controversial nature. Hill's wife, Annie Lou, opposed publication because of the Devil's prominent role and the book's blunt critiques of organized religion, public education, and traditional parenting. After Hill's death in 1970, the manuscript passed to his wife, then to her nephew, and finally to the Napoleon Hill Foundation. The manuscript remained unpublished until after the death of the nephew's wife, who shared the original concerns. It was finally released in 2011 with annotations by Sharon Lechter, co-author of "Rich Dad Poor Dad".
Any praise or critique of this book, we would say, is largely irrelevant, as, beyond the words, terms of the day, structure and language, there can be little if any historical context. Context, in that, “what was Hill going through in 1938? What was the state of the world, or “his world”, that would compel him to view his contemporaries, 98% of them, no less, as “drifters?” What impact did the depression have on his perspective?” We will never know. We will also never know what the reviews of the day would have been. Was Hill looking to capitalize on “Think & Grow Rich?” that immortal blockbuster?
“Outwitting the Devil” is a “single” from a long play we call, “Writing Fiction” which will be available soon. We are making some positive changes to the series. So subscribe up on one of the channels, (we recommend Odysee.com these days.) Links are always around somewhere.
