It was some friends who put it in my hands with a "this will blow your mind, but in a good way," and they certainly weren't lying because The Hair of Venus came to me as a recommendation over drinks and has ended up being one of those books that changes the way you look at a blank page.

I confess I had never read anything like it, and I don't say that as a cliché, but with the bewilderment of someone who opens a door and discovers that there is not a hallway, but an entire forest. Sishkin, that Russian writer based in Switzerland, managed to build a novel that seems to defy all the rules I took for granted. At times it seems like a love story, but also a diary, a botanical treatise, an essay on language, and a collection of letters that will never arrive on time.

The structure is the first thing that unsettles you because there is no single narrator to hold your hand, just fragments and overlapping voices. There is a translator who receives letters from his beloved from the distant past, also a child in ancient Persia, there is a Chinese chronicler with footnotes that turn into rivers. Reading this book is like doing exercises inside a dream where you know everything is connected by some invisible thread, but that thread is water, or wind, or the fact that we are all made of words that others spoke before.

The title, The Hair of Venus, refers to a delicate fern that grows in the cracks, and that is the exact feeling the book leaves you with, a beauty that springs up where you least expected to find life. There are sentences I had to read twice, not because they were difficult, but because they were so precise they physically hurt me.

Discovering this novel has been for me like opening the doors of the mind, but without the grandiloquence of someone achieving enlightenment; I think it is more like when you adjust the focus of binoculars and suddenly you see every leaf, every drop, every crack with a clarity that wasn't there before. Sishkin has taught me that a novel can also be a herbarium, a map of desire, a letter that someone wrote a thousand years ago and that I, by chance, have been able to read today.

I don't know if I would recommend it to everyone, or perhaps only to those friends who understand that reading is not just following a plot, but letting yourself be inhabited by a rhythm, a breath, a different way of being in time. To them, and to you who read me from this community #hivebookclub, if you feel like breaking the mold a little, look for The Hair of Venus, that book that has left me with that strange feeling of having traveled without moving from my armchair and wanting to start it again as soon as I finish it.

Fueron unos amigos quienes me lo dejaron en las manos con un “esto te va a romper la cabeza, pero para bien”, y vaya que no mentían porque El cabello de Venus llegó a mí como una recomendación entre copas y ha terminado siendo uno de esos libros que te cambian la forma de mirar una página en blanco.

Confieso que nunca había leído nada parecido y no lo digo como un cliché, sino con la perplejidad de quien abre una puerta y descubre que no hay un pasillo, sino un bosque entero. Sishkin, ese escritor ruso afincado en Suiza, pudo construir una novela que parece desafiar todas las reglas que yo daba por sentadas. Por momentos parece una historia de amor pero también un diario, un tratado de botánica, un ensayo sobre el lenguaje y una colección de cartas que nunca llegarán a tiempo.

La estructura es lo primero que te descoloca porque no hay un narrador único que te coja de la mano, solo hay fragmentos y voces que se superponen. Existe un traductor que recibe cartas de su amada desde el pasado remoto, también un niño en la antigua Persia, hay un cronista chino con notas al pie que se convierten en ríos. Leer este libro es como hacer ejercicios dentro de un sueño donde sabes que todo está conectado por algún hilo invisible, pero ese hilo es el agua, o el viento, o el hecho de que todos estamos hechos de palabras que otros pronunciaron antes.

El título, El cabello de Venus, alude a un helecho delicado que crece en las grietas y esa es la sensación exacta que deja el libro, una belleza que brota donde no esperabas encontrar vida. Hay frases que tuve que leer dos veces, no porque fueran difíciles, sino porque eran tan precisas que me dolían físicamente.

Descubrir esta novela ha sido para mí como abrir las puertas de la mente, pero sin la grandilocuencia de quien alcanza una iluminación, creo que más bien como cuando ajustas el enfoque de unos binoculares y de repente ves cada hoja, cada gota, cada grieta con una nitidez que antes no estaba. Sishkin me ha enseñado que una novela puede ser también un herbario, un mapa del deseo, una carta que alguien escribió hace mil años y que yo, por azar, he podido leer hoy.

No sé si se la recomendaría a todo el mundo o quizá solo a esas amistades que entienden que leer no es solo seguir una trama, sino dejarse habitar por un ritmo, una respiración, una forma distinta de estar en el tiempo.
