D.Sketchbook: Luces y sombras

Good morning, I'm sharing my blog about my digital practices. I focused these practices mainly on drawing light and shadow in my drawings. To be honest, it's not something I have much control over, although I have practiced it a lot. I keep doing some still lifes to try to master it, but I think it's something that improves by drawing and drawing.

Buenos días, les comparto mi blog de mis prácticas digitales. Estas prácticas las concentré sobre todo en el dibujo de luces y sombras en mis dibujos. La verdad no es algo que controle mucho, aunque sí lo he practicado mucho. Sigo haciendo algunos bodegones para tratar de dominarlo bien, pero creo que es algo que se va mejorando dibujando y dibujando.

I started the day with something simple: practicing lines and shapes to warm up my hand for the more complex exercises. I also practiced some straight and curved lines and a bit of cross hatching. This was the result of my warm-up.

Comencé el día por algo simple: practicar líneas y formas para calentar la mano para los ejercicios más complicados. Además practiqué algunas líneas rectas y curvas y un poco de cross hatching. Este fue el resultado de mi calentamiento.

I will use this girl I drew to do a shading exercise I found on Pinterest. I share the drawing in large size in case you want to use it to repeat this exercise. The goal is simple: repeat six shadings in gray with the main light source in six different zones. So I will start by repeating my model on the page, making six copies.

Utilizaré esta chica que dibujé para realizar un ejercicio de sombreado que encontré en Pinterest. Les comparto el dibujo en grande por si quieren usarlo para repetir este ejercicio. El objetivo es simple: repetir en gris seis sombreados con el foco de luz principal en seis zonas distintas. Así que empezaré repitiendo mi modelo en la página haciendo seis copias.

I will draw each copy completely in gray and place the six light sources in the following order, starting with the first on the left: top left, above the head, from below, bottom left, behind the character, completely at the center right of the character. Then, simply using the same gray in multiply mode, I will place the shadows on the character. There will be two main types of shadows: cast shadows and shadows from the areas of greatest occlusion of the character. This is how my shading exercise and today's practice objective were completed.

Dibujaré cada copia totalmente de gris y ubicaré los seis focos de luz en el siguiente orden, comenzando por el primero a la izquierda: superior izquierda, encima de la cabeza, desde abajo, debajo a la izquierda, detrás del personaje, completamente en el centro derecha del personaje. Después, simplemente con el mismo gris en modo multiplicar, ubicaré las sombras en el personaje. Habrá dos sombras principales: las proyectadas y las de las zonas de mayor oclusión del personaje. Así quedó completo mi ejercicio de sombreado y el objetivo de la práctica de hoy.

I wanted to try now doing it with color, which is much more difficult. The first thing will be to color the entire character, and then, on a layer with the opposite color (blue in multiply mode), apply the shadows following the pattern I drew in black and white. This is how the character looked in full color.

Quise intentar ahora hacerlo con color, que es mucho más difícil. Lo primero será colorear todo el personaje, y después, en una capa con el color contrario (azul en modo multiplicar), aplicar las sombras siguiendo el patrón que dibujé en blanco y negro. Así quedó el personaje con todo color.

For some reason, the colored character reminds me of Kairi from Kingdom Hearts hahahaha.

Por alguna razón, el personaje coloreado me recuerda a Kairi de Kingdom Hearts jajajaja.

The first thing I tried was to draw it with a zenithal light right above its hair and projecting dramatic lights onto the hair and nose.

Lo primero que intenté es dibujarlo con una luz cenital justo encima de su cabello y proyectando luces dramáticas encima del pelo y la nariz.

In the next one, I placed the light far behind the character; his entire face is in darkness, and there is only a little glow on the edges.

En el siguiente, coloqué la luz bien alejada a la espalda del personaje, todo su rostro está en la oscuridad y solo hay un poco de brillo en los bordes.

Finally, I did the last of the light sources: a strong light completely on the right side of the character. Here you see the entire right side illuminated and shadows in the areas of greatest darkness or where the light is interrupted by some part of the character's body.

Por último, realicé el último de los focos de luz: una luz fuerte completamente al lateral derecho del personaje. Aquí se ve todo el lado derecho iluminado y sombras en las zonas de mayor oscuridad o en las zonas donde se interrumpe la luz por alguna parte del cuerpo del personaje.

With this I finish my practice for today. I think it was a very good session focused only on one topic and I got a lot out of it. I still have to study a lot about lights and shadows, but especially how they interact with color. Thank you for joining me for another day of drawing.

Con esto termino mis prácticas de hoy. Creo que fue una muy buena sesión focalizada solo en un tema y que obtuve muy buen provecho. Me queda estudiar mucho de luces y sombras, pero sobre todo cómo interactúa con el color. Gracias por acompañarme un día más dibujando.
