That was the headline on the teleprompter. Tom adjusted his tie as if he were doing it for the last time. For thirty years, he had reported on wars, crises, and elections from the comfort of a television studio, sitting at that desk... But the anchor couldn't help but sweat with anxiety.
When he’s on the air, he always maintains impeccable posture and speaks with a voice full of confidence. Today, his hands were trembling slightly.
The cameras focused on him. The red light came on...
“Good evening,” said Tom, and his voice sounded strange in the silence of the studio.
“For decades, this channel has brought you the good news and the bad. Today, it falls to me to deliver the last news you will ever hear.”
At that moment, Tom stared straight into the camera, feeling the weight of millions of terrified gazes. He swallowed hard, feeling a lump in his throat.
“The astronomical observatory has just confirmed that the meteorite did not veer off course. The impact is imminent and inevitable. We have less than an hour left.”
“Go to your families. Hug those you love. It has been an honor to report to you. Farewell. There is no more news. Goodbye.”
