Let's visit the Cueva del Guácharo
A few months ago, I went to the Cueva del Guácharo, a place located in the state of Monagas in Venezuela. I live in Cumaná, the capital of the state of Sucre, which is 3 hours from Caripe. And although I had already gone on two occasions, this time we wanted a sister-in-law to see the cave.
Hace unos meses, fui a la Cueva del Guácharo, un lugar ubicado en el estado de Monagas en Venezuela. Yo vivo en Cumaná, la capital del estado de Sucre, que está a 3 horas de Caripe. Y aunque ya había ido en dos ocasiones, esta vez queríamos que una cuñada viera la cueva.
We left very early, around 7 in the morning, in our own car. We arrived around 11 in the morning because it is mandatory to stop along the way, since there are stalls selling different things like fruits, crafts, drinks, and food. There is always something to buy, we always crave something, and it is always good to support the local economy. That is why it is necessary to bring cash because most vendors do not have a point of sale or mobile payment.
Salimos muy temprano, alrededor de las 7 de la mañana, en nuestro propio coche. Llegamos alrededor de las 11 de la mañana porque es obligatorio detenerse en el camino, ya que hay puestos que venden diferentes cosas como frutas, artesanías, bebidas y comida. Siempre hay algo que comprar, siempre se nos antoja algo, y siempre es bueno apoyar la economía local. Por eso es necesario llevar dinero en efectivo porque la mayoría de los vendedores no tienen punto de venta o pago móvil.
As we approach Caripe, the weather and vegetation change: the weather is cooler and the vegetation lusher and greener. When we arrive, we take the detour that would take us to the Cave. Don't worry because there are signs and notices everywhere, so you won't get lost.
A medida que nos acercamos a Caripe, el clima y la vegetación cambian: el clima es más fresco y la vegetación más exuberante y verde. Cuando llegamos, tomamos el desvío que nos llevaría a la Cueva. No te preocupes porque hay señales y avisos por todas partes, así que no te perderás.
The Cave of the Oilbird is located on Cerro Negro, which is Venezuela's first natural monument and was visited by Alexander von Humboldt in 1799. Likewise, it is believed that the Chaima people visited this cave to perform rituals and invoke their gods, which has given rise to legends and mysterious stories. It is also said to be 10.5 km long, and although the total extent of the cave is not yet known, many assert that the end of the cave is in Brazil, the South American country, as seeds or fruits that are only found in that country have been discovered, and it is presumed that the oilbirds, birds that inhabit this cave, bring them from that area.
La Cueva del Guácharo se encuentra en el Cerro Negro, que es el primer monumento natural de Venezuela y fue visitado por Alexander von Humboldt en 1799. Asimismo, se cree que el pueblo Chaima visitaba esta cueva para realizar rituales e invocar a sus dioses, lo que ha dado lugar a leyendas e historias misteriosas. También se dice que tiene 10,5 km de longitud, y aunque aún no se conoce la extensión total de la cueva, muchos afirman que el final de la cueva está en Brasil, el país sudamericano, ya que se han descubierto semillas o frutos que solo se encuentran en ese país, y se presume que los guácharos, aves que habitan esta cueva, los traen desde esa zona.
Although inside the cave one can find mice, bats, spiders, snakes, what predominates are the oilbirds, hence the name of the cave. The Oilbird is a bird that has adapted to living in the dark and only leaves the cave in the evenings, when night begins. The flock departure of these birds to search for food is one of the most important events of the cave and worth seeing.
Aunque dentro de la cueva se pueden encontrar ratones, murciélagos, arañas, serpientes, lo que predomina son los pájaros Guácharos, de ahí el nombre de la cueva. El pájaro Guácharo es un ave que se ha adaptado a vivir en la oscuridad y solo sale de la cueva por las noches, cuando comienza la noche. La salida en bandada de estos pájaros para buscar alimento es uno de los eventos más importantes de la cueva y vale la pena verlo.
Inside the cave we will find streams of crystal-clear water, very narrow passages that are not recommended for people who suffer from claustrophobia, stone halls made of mineral formations, such as stalactites and stalagmites, which create whimsical shapes that we can only see if we have imagination. This tour should be done with appropriate and comfortable clothing, boots, and with a guide, who will not only guide the tour but also provide information about each of the things or events observed along the way.
Dentro de la cueva encontraremos arroyos de agua cristalina, pasajes muy estrechos que no se recomiendan para personas que sufren de claustrofobia, salones de piedra hechos de formaciones minerales, como estalactitas y estalagmitas, que crean formas caprichosas que solo podemos ver si tenemos imaginación. Este recorrido debe realizarse con ropa adecuada y cómoda, botas, y con un guía, quien no solo guiará el recorrido, sino que también proporcionará información sobre cada una de las cosas o acontecimientos observados en el camino.
Tourists can only explore 1200 meters of the cave, but it is enough to get an idea of everything inside. Between the smells, the slippery ground, the noises, the animals, the darkness (only the guide is allowed to carry a lamp or flashlight since the oilbirds are sensitive to light), you come out as if you had an extreme experience. I remember that the last time I entered Cueva el Guácharo I was 15 years old.
Los turistas solo pueden explorar 1200 metros de la cueva, pero es suficiente para hacerse una idea de todo lo que hay dentro. Entre los olores, el suelo resbaladizo, los ruidos, los animales, la oscuridad (solo el guía puede llevar una lámpara o linterna ya que los guácharos son sensibles a la luz), sales como si hubieras tenido una experiencia extrema. Recuerdo que la última vez que entré en la Cueva del Guácharo tenía 15 años.
Upon arriving at La Cueva del Guácharo, we found that there was a food fair where not only local handicrafts were being sold, but also traditional sweets. There was also a tasting of artisanal liquors and strawberries with cream. It must be said that Caripe is known for offering the best strawberries with cream in the country, as well as offering all kinds of liquors. I tried a small cup of rose petal liqueur, another of ginger, and another small cup of cocoa. All three were delicious.
Al llegar a La Cueva del Guácharo, encontramos que había una feria de comida donde no solo se vendían artesanías locales, sino también dulces tradicionales. También había una degustación de licores artesanales y fresas con crema. Cabe decir que Caripe es conocido por ofrecer las mejores fresas con crema del país, además de ofrecer todo tipo de licores. Probé una pequeña copa de licor de pétalos de rosa, otra de jengibre y otra pequeña copa de cacao. Los tres estaban deliciosos.
Without wasting any more time, we went to find out how we could enter the Cave, but we received unpleasant news: The entrance to the Cave cost $3, but they only accept cash and foreign currency, and we did not have enough cash, since we had spent it on the way. So we were left wanting to go back in.
Sin perder más tiempo, fuimos a averiguar cómo podíamos entrar en la Cueva, pero recibimos noticias desagradables: La entrada a la Cueva costaba $3, pero solo aceptaban efectivo y moneda extranjera, y no teníamos suficiente efectivo, ya que lo habíamos gastado en el camino. Así que nos quedamos con las ganas de entrar.
Anyway, we did not feel disappointed, since we had not only made a family trip, but also because Caripe is such a beautiful town, that in every corner there is something that surprises us. That is why, if you ever have the opportunity to travel through this part of the world, write in your agenda to visit this place, better known as the Garden of the East.
De todos modos, no nos sentimos decepcionados, ya que no solo habíamos hecho un viaje familiar, sino también porque Caripe es un pueblo tan hermoso, que en cada esquina hay algo que nos sorprende. Es por eso que, si alguna vez tienen la oportunidad de viajar por esta parte del mundo, apunten en su agenda visitar este lugar, mejor conocido como el Jardín del Oriente.
