En el estadio Metropolitano, se dio por finalizada la trilogía de encuentros entre el Atlético de Madrid y FC Barcelona que posiblemente sea uno de los enfrentamientos más repetidos en la temporada; los dos clubes de La Liga cerraban su participación en los cuartos de final en donde, como es evidente, tan solo uno debería seguir y justamente ese fue el equipo colchonero que, a pesar de caer de local, un solo gol de Ademola Lookman fue suficiente para superar a un gran rival que nunca dejó de creer en la remontada.

El Atleti el día de ayer nuevamente demostró una versión alejada en intensidad y buen juego, aunque todo queda atrás cuando es la efectividad lo que les hizo llegar a la semifinal de la actual temporada de la UEFA Champions League; el equipo del Cholo Simeone, con importantes bajas en la defensa, vio cómo en 20 minutos el Barça empataba la eliminatoria, pero de igual manera se mantuvieron en el plan, esperando el error defensivo del rival, el cual llegó a los más de 30 minutos del encuentro, en donde, por la necesidad de atacar y conseguir la ventaja en el marcador, el equipo culé nuevamente presenta desconcentración en su línea defensiva, lo cual ocasionó la jugada del único gol del club madrileño y que fue suficiente para pasar de ronda.

Yesterday, Atleti once again failed to show their usual intensity and quality of play, though all that pales in comparison to the effectiveness that carried them to the semifinals of this season’s UEFA Champions League; Cholo Simeone’s team, missing key players in defense, watched as Barça tied the series within 20 minutes, but they stuck to their game plan, waiting for a defensive error from their opponent, which came just over 30 minutes into the match. Driven by the need to attack and take the lead, the Catalan side once again lost focus in their defensive line, leading to the play that resulted in the Madrid club’s only goal—which was enough to advance to the next round.
En mi opinión, esta versión del Atleti no fue para nada la mejor, ya que, como ocurrió en el encuentro de ida, los colchoneros no tuvieron el control del partido y se vieron beneficiados primeramente por los constantes fallos de los delanteros del Barça y por los aciertos de Juan Musso, portero que estuvo a la altura de la eliminatoria, en especial en este encuentro al realizar hasta siete atajadas, una estadística igual o hasta más que importante que el gol de Lookman. Nuevamente repito lo referente a la efectividad en ataque por parte del Atleti quienes tuvieron la virtud de golpear en momentos precisos, primeramente fue el gol de Julián castigando aún más a su rival después de recibir una expulsión, así como el gol de Sørloth que también fue de gran relevancia; ese resultado a pesar de que el Barcelona lo empató en el encuentro de vuelta sirvió para mantener el equipo rojiblanco en competición y seguir soñando con ganar está gran competición; creo que el Cholo entendió que existe la necesidad de tener efectividad para anotar, así como contar con un portero de alto nivel o que presente una actualidad impresionante, así como otros factores ppara seguir con opciones de ganar la Champions, justamente eso lo ha hecho el vecino múltiple ganador de dicha competición.

In my opinion, this version of Atleti was by no means their best, since—just as in the first leg—the Colchoneros never really controlled the game and owed their success primarily to the constant misses by Barça’s forwards and the saves made by Juan Musso, a goalkeeper who rose to the occasion throughout the tie, especially in this match, making as many as seven saves—a statistic just as important, if not more so, than Lookman’s goal. Once again, I’ll reiterate the point about Atleti’s effectiveness in attack; they had the knack of striking at precise moments. First came Julián’s goal, which further punished their opponent after they had already been reduced to ten men, as well as Sørloth’s goal, which was also of great significance; that result, despite Barcelona tying it in the second leg, served to keep the red-and-white team in the competition and keep their dream of winning this great tournament alive; I believe Cholo understood that there is a need for scoring efficiency, as well as having a top-tier goalkeeper or one in impressive form, along with other factors to remain in contention for the Champions League title—precisely what their neighbors, multiple winners of that competition, have done.
Por parte del FC Barcelona, es evidente que tenía una gran mentalidad en no solo empatar la eliminatoria, sino de, por supuesto, superarla en los primeros 45 minutos del encuentro, pero lamentablemente este equipo fue muy fiel a la versión que han demostrado en toda la temporada de la UCL, esa que en su parte negativa, demostró desconcentración en su línea defensiva siendo ese e gran problema que no pudo superar Flick junto a los jugadores, nunca existió una comunión en hacer un buen trabajo y si en demostrar varios fallos lo cual les hizo recibir goles en contra en cada uno de los encuentros realizados; otro de los problemas que se hizo evidente es la falta de precisión o de eficacia en el ataque, justamente eso es lo que deja fuera al Barca de las semifinales, ya que fallaron mucho tanto en el encuentro de ida como en el de vuelta, algo que, si comparamos con la anterior temporada, la eficacia en los delanteros fue lo que les llevó a disputar la semifinal y el estar a segundos de ser parte de la final, pero en esta temporada, la ineficacia se convirtió en un gran problema para el equipo de Flick.

As for FC Barcelona, it was clear that they were determined not only to tie the series but, of course, to take the lead in the first 45 minutes of the match, but unfortunately, this team remained true to the form they’ve shown throughout the UCL season—a form that, on the negative side, revealed a lack of focus in their defensive line. This was the major problem that Flick and the players couldn’t overcome; there was never a sense of unity in doing a good job, only in making numerous mistakes, which led to them conceding goals in every match played; Another problem that became evident is the lack of precision or effectiveness in attack; that is precisely what knocked Barça out of the semifinals, as they missed too many chances in both the first and second legs. In contrast to last season, when the forwards’ effectiveness carried them to the semifinals and left them seconds away from reaching the final, but this season, that lack of effectiveness became a major problem for Flick’s team.
Definitivamente, los tres encuentros superaron las expectativas de todos los aficionados; ambos equipos anotaron hasta ocho goles en los 3 Rounds, pero no hay duda que en los 4tos de final de Champions League, fue en donde más se hizo notorio tanto la exigencia y presión que sintieron todos los jugadores lo cual ofreció gran emoción por la necesidad de seguir con vida en la competición; lamentablemente no todo fue perfecto a parte de la descripción futbolística de esta eliminatoria, es imposible no sumar la pobre actuación arbitral que así como ocurrió en el encuentro de ida, en esta oportunidad fue influyente en el resultado final; es impresionante como se repiten errores con dos árbitros diferentes en el campo de juego e imagino la frustración de los jugadores (en este caso del Barça) al ver como no se le sanciona a favor ninguna acción requerida del VAR y si se interpretan sus acciones como faltas cuando al rival no le sucede lo mismo; este mal accionar arbitral ya lo padeció el FC Barcelona en otras ocasiones donde se le ha privado el pasar a segunda fase de la competición o como sucedió el pasado año cuando no alcanzaron la final después de un evidente muy mal arbitraje y ayer (en la ida también) fueron nuevamente perjudicados. Aparte de la crítica que tengo sobre el arbitraje, creo que al final la contundencia del Atleti fue lo que generó la gran diferencia en la eliminatoria, y habrá que esperar a qué rival deberán enfrentar en la semifinal, en donde creo que son claros favoritos a superarla.

Aside from the soccer-related aspects of this tie, it’s impossible not to mention the poor refereeing performance, which—just as in the first leg—had a significant impact on the final result this time around; It is striking how mistakes are repeated with two different referees on the field, and I can imagine the frustration of the players (in this case, Barça’s) when they see that no VAR-required calls are made in their favor, while their actions are interpreted as fouls when the same does not happen to the opponent; FC Barcelona has suffered from this poor refereeing on other occasions, where they’ve been denied a spot in the next round of the competition, or as happened last year when they failed to reach the final after clearly terrible refereeing, and yesterday (in the first leg as well) they were once again disadvantaged. Aside from my criticism of the refereeing, I believe that in the end, Atleti’s decisiveness was what made the biggest difference in the tie, and we’ll have to wait and see which opponent they face in the semifinals, where I think they are clear favorites to advance.
