reetings, friends of the #blackandwhite community. For over a year now, I’ve been taking photos regularly at the Havana Malecón, so the people who frequent the area already know me. Among them are children—yes, there are several kids who go there every afternoon to swim and hang out, which is very dangerous; practically every month someone dies from the tide, and seeing these kids really worries me a lot.

aludos, amigos de la comunidad #blackandwhite. Hace más de un año estoy haciendo fotos de manera frecuente en el Malecón Habanero, de ahí que las personas que frecuentan el lugar ya me conozcan. Entre ellos los niños, pues sí, hay varios niños que todas las tardes van a bañarse y pasar el rato, algo que es muy peligroso; prácticamente todos los meses muere alguien por la marea, y ver a estos muchachos de verdad me preocupa muchísimo.

They call me Padrino, and as soon as they see me, they want me to take their pictures. “But those photos aren’t to show your teachers at school, right?!” they tell me all the time. They’re nimble at climbing the wall, run among the sharp rocks, and keep an eye out for the police.

Me llaman Padrino, y en cuanto me ven, quieren que les haga fotos. —¡Pero esas fotos no son para enseñarlas a los maestros de la escuela, ¿verdad?! Me dicen todo el tiempo. Tienen una agilidad para subir el muro, corren entre las afiladas rocas y vigilan a la policía.

There are laws that prohibit using that place as a beach, but they ignore them; in fact, they constantly defy the authorities. And that’s how they spend the afternoon—playing, swimming, and defying danger.

Hay leyes que no permiten usar aquel lugar como playa, pero ellos hacen caso omiso; hasta más, desafían todo el tiempo a las autoridades. Y así pasan la tarde, entre jugar, bañarse y desafiar el peligro.
