Why brands are dying faster now?

Today, the lifespan of a brand is shorter than ever. One of the reason brands lose popularity is failure to navigate the digital and psychological landscape. Several iconic brands that once dominated the market in 1980's or 1990's have either completely disappeared or significantly faded into obscurity. Do you want to know the reason?
Some of the reasons are:
- These brands often lost their footing due to the entry of bigger competitor or a failure to adopt to the modern technologies.
- The consumer doesn't just buy product but an experience which is created through careful advertising and campaigning.
- Many heritage brands just stick to their old ways which worked 20 or 30 years ago and never adopt to the modern technologies to promote their businesses.
- If a brand's website is slow, its packaging is boring, or it's store feel dusty, Gen Z and Millennials will instantly switch to a cooler Instagram-native brand that offers better aesthetics.
- Brands need to maintain their positive image, if a brand claims to be "eco-friendly" or "empowering" but is caught underpaying workers or using excessive plastic, the backlash on social media is instant which can be very disastrous for it's image.
- People want to see the face behind the brand. Many fashion brands are losing ground to smaller, transparent local labels because people want to know the story i.e. want to know who is behind the brand or how they started.
- In the past, brands didn't have to work hard to stay popular. They did it by buying TV ads. Now the game has changed, you can only stay popular winning the algorithm.
- Brands that don't produce consistent, engaging content on TikTok or Reels simply vanish from the consumer's mind. If people don't see you on their feed, you don't exist!
- A bad review or feedback can be a blow to the existence of a brand. In old days if someone didn't like your brand they would only talk about it with the people around them but now if someone posts a video against a brand that gets 100k views, it can destroy decade of loyalty in 24 hours.
Back in the day, a brand could dominate just by being available. Now, availability isn't enough. We live in an era where we’re constantly bombarded with "the next big thing" on our feeds. If a brand stops being relevant, stops listening to its customers, or loses its "soul" in exchange for corporate growth, we’re quick to hit the unfollow button. The brands that survive are the ones that feel human. They aren't just logos on a shelf; they are the ones that talk to us, admit when they’re wrong, and actually make our lives a little easier or more beautiful. In the end, popularity is a gift from the consumer, and in 2026, it's a gift that has to be earned every single day.
