From distance =/= Aus der Entfernung 👹🍣🎎 Wonderful Japan ENG-GER

Whether viewed up close or from a distance—depending on your perspective, the same place can suddenly look completely different. And this is also true for cities, which can sometimes be much more charming and interesting when viewed from afar.

This may apply to Aizuwakamatsu as well, a town that forms the center of the Aizu region in western Fukushima Prefecture. Aizuwakamatsu is steeped in tradition, still regarded today as a center of samurai culture and particularly known for Tsuruga-jo Castle and its significant role in the Boshin War. Today, the city combines its eventful history with cultural attractions such as historic samurai residences, sake breweries, and nearby Mount Bandai, making it a popular destination both historically and for its scenery.

But when you’re actually walking around the city itself, you realize that its best days may already be behind it. Much of it seems old and a bit empty, although there are also signs that something new is happening here and there. But away from the tourist attractions, the city sometimes feels like it’s missing something.

When you look at it from a distance, of course, you don’t notice any of this. On the contrary, the city actually looks more exciting than it really is. Almost a bit dreamy, especially in the morning mist.

I really enjoy being here, and perhaps because this wasn’t our first visit, I’ve noticed it time and again. Nevertheless, Aizuwakamatsu has truly won a place in my heart, and I’ll definitely be back. Even if it isn’t the most beautiful city, we feel very comfortable here and are already looking forward to our next visit. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for it!

Aus der Nähe oder von weiter weg - je nach Perspektive sieht der gleiche Ort auf einmal ganz anders aus. Und das gilt auch für Städte, welche vor allem aus der Ferne betrachtet manchmal viel reizvoller und interessanter sein können.

Möglicherweise gilt das auch für Aizuwakamatsu, welche das Zentrum der Aizu-Region im Westen der Präfektur Fukushima bildet. Aizuwakamatsu ist Stadt voll mit Traditonen, die auch jetzt noch als Zentrum der Samurai-Kultur gilt und besonders durch die Burg Tsuruga-jo Castle sowie ihre bedeutende Rolle im Boshin War bekannt wurde. Heute verbindet die Stadt ihre bewegte Geschichte mit kulturellen Sehenswürdigkeiten wie historischen Samurai-Residenzen, Sake-Brauereien und dem nahegelegenen Mount Bandai, wodurch sie sowohl historisch als auch landschaftlich ein beliebtes Reiseziel ist.

Aber wenn man in der Stadt selber unterwegs ist, merkt man dann doch, dass ihre besten Tage schon vorrüber sein könnten. Vieles wirkt alt und ein wenig leer, obwohl es doch auch Zeichen gibt, dass hier etwas Neues geschieht. Aber abseits der touristischen Sehenswürdigkeiten fehlt der Stadt manchmal dann doch etwas.

Wenn man die Stadt aus der Entfernung betrachtet, merkt man davon natürlich nichts. Ganz im Gegenteil, irgendwie sieht die Stadt dann sogar aufregender auf, als sie es eigentlich ist. Fast schon ein wenig verträumt, besonders im Morgennebel.

Ich bin gerne hier, und wahrscheinlich weil unser letzter Besuch halt nicht der erste war, ist es mir wieder und wieder aufgefallen. Aber trotzdem habe ich Aizuwakamatsu in mein Herz geschlossen und werde mit Sicherheit wiederkommen. Denn auch wenn die Stadt vielleicht die Schönste ist, fühlen wir uns hier wohl und freuen uns daher schon sehr auf unseren nächsten Besuch. Hoffentlich müssen wir darauf nicht all zu lange warten!
