This time we're going to analyze one of the darkest tales in the Brothers Grimm repertoire, although it's not exactly the darkest, but I can assure you that the original story is very different from the Disney version.
En esta ocasión vamos a analizar uno de los cuentos más turbios del repertorio de los Hermanos Grimm, aunque no es exactamente el más turbio, pero les puedo asegurar que la historia original dista muchísimo de la versión de Disney.
Overview/Resumen
It all begins when a pregnant woman tells her husband she has a strong craving for lettuce, so he steals some from the garden of the witch Gothel. But when Gothel discovers him, the father must agree to give up his baby at birth as payment to avoid the witch's wrath. Upon the birth, Gothel takes the girl, names her Rapunzel, and locks her in a tower with no stairs or windows. The witch never cuts the girl's hair, so by the time she's a young woman, she has a very, very long braid, which is very useful to Gothel. Every time she arrives at the tower, she calls out, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" One day, a prince hears Rapunzel singing and, curious to see her, imitates the witch's voice. The young woman lets down her braid, the prince climbs up to the tower, and they fall in love.
Todo inicia cuando una mujer embarazada le dice a su marido que tiene un gran antojo de comer lechugas, así que él se roba algunas del huerto de la bruja Gothel, pero cuando ella lo descubre el padre debe aceptar entregar a su bebé cuando nazca como pago para evitar la ira de la bruja. Al nacer ella se lleva a la niña, la llama Rapunzel y la encierra en una torre sin escaleras ni ventanas. La bruja jamás corta el cabello de la niña, así que para cuando ya es una jovencita tiene una trenza muy muy larga, la cual es muy útil para Gothel que cada vez que llega a la torre grita: "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, deja caer tu trenza". En una ocasión un príncipe escucha cantar a Rapunzel y como siente curiosidad de verla imita la voz de la bruja, de modo que la joven deja caer la trenza, el príncipe escala hacia la torre y ambos se enamoran.
As a result of that love, Rapunzel becomes pregnant with twins, but when the witch discovers the romance between them, she banishes Rapunzel, throws the prince from the top of the tower and the poor man falls on a thorny bush, hurting his eyes and going blind, but years later Rapunzel and her children meet the unfortunate prince, and her tears are enough to cure his blindness.
Como fruto de ese amor Rapunzel queda embarazada de gemelos, pero cuando la bruja descubre el romance entre ambos, destierra a Rapunzel, arroja al príncipe desde lo alto de la torre y el pobre cae sobre un arbusto espinoso, lastimándose los ojos y quedando ciego, pero años después Rapunzel y sus hijos se encuentran con el desafortunado príncipe, y las lágrimas de ella son suficientes para curar la ceguera de él.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
There is much to analyze in this story, for example, respect for private property and the importance of not letting oneself be ruled by whims (like Rapunzel's parents who were even willing to give her up for just a few lettuce leaves). But on the other hand, we move to a deeper theme, which is the witch Gothel's desire for control and domination over the girl Rapunzel. This could perfectly fit with the archetype of the "Devouring Mother." This is a concept developed by the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung that serves to identify that figure opposed to common maternal ideals. The Devouring Mother does not build up her son or daughter, but rather consumes them, subjugates them, violates them, and controls them at all times. Sometimes she tries to project her frustrations onto her son or daughter or tries to achieve her unfulfilled goals through them, but in the most sinister instances, she seeks to directly destroy them when she feels "betrayed" in some way.
Hay mucho que analizar en esta historia, por ejemplo el respeto a la propiedad privada y a la importancia de no dejarse dominar por los caprichos (como los padres de Rapunzel que hasta estuvieron dispuestos a entregarla solo por unas cuantas lechugas) pero por otro lado pasamos a un tema más profundo, y es el deseo de control y dominación de la bruja Gothel sobre la niña Rapunzel, esto podría encajar perfectamente con el arquetipo de la "Madre Devoradora" este es un concepto desarrollado por el psiquiatra suizo Carl Gustav Jung que sirve para identificar esa figura opuesta a los ideales maternos comunes, la Madre Devoradora no construye sino que consume a su hijo o hija, lo somete, lo vulnera y l controla en todo momento, a veces pretende depositar en su hijo o hija sus frustraciones o pretende lograr sus metas no cumplidas a través de ellos, pero en las ocasiones más siniestras buscan directamente destruirlos cuando se sienten "traicionadas" de alguna manera.
The story is rich in symbolism. For example, the tower can represent isolation, control, and the loss of freedom—the witch's dominion over the girl she raised. Long hair is synonymous with youth and beauty, but at the same time, it is the only link between the witch and Rapunzel, since it is through her hair that the witch manages to reach the top of the tower to see her. For this reason, she felt betrayed when she discovered that the prince also used Rapunzel's hair to see her; this meant that her space had been invaded and threatened her system of control, which is why she takes revenge on him in such a cruel way.
El cuento está cargado de simbolismos, por ejemplo la torre puede representar el aislamiento, el control y la pérdida de libertad, el dominio de la bruja sobre la niña que ella ha criado. El cabello largo es un sinónimo de juventud y belleza pero al mismo tiempo es el único vínculo que une a la bruja con Rapunzel, ya que es a través de su cabello como la bruja logra acceder hacia lo alto de la torre para verla, por esta razón se sintió traicionada cuando descubrió que el príncipe también usaba el cabello de Rapunzel para poder verla, esto significaba que habían invadido su espacio y amenazaba con su sistema de control, por eso se venga de él de esa forma tan cruel.
Rapunzel evolves as a character, going from being a controlled girl and woman to taking control of her own life. She was banished by the witch and therefore forced to leave her "comfort zone," the place where she felt "safe." This forced her to think critically, analyze her options, and primarily seek a quick solution, not only for herself but also for the children she carried in her womb. So, it could be said that this is a story about resilience and overcoming abuse and manipulation.
Rapunzel logra evolucionar como personaje, pasando de ser una niña y mujer controlada, a tomar las riendas de su propia vida, fue desterrada por la bruja y por lo tanto se vio forzada a salir de su "zona de confort" el lugar donde se sentía "segura" pero esto la obligó a tener pensamiento critico, a analizar sus opciones y principalmente buscar una solución rápida, no solo para ella, sino para los hijos que llevaba en su vientre, así que se podría decir que esta es una historia sobre resiliencia y la superación del abuso y la manipulación.
Love and healing are the reward for perseverance and the decision not to give up. Finally, the Prince and she not only reunite, but he regains his sight, leaving us with a great warmth in our souls and satisfaction as readers.
