Greeting Readers
Yesterday was my anniversary with my partner, so no update. So please enjoy the update today!
The sky was filled with fat black clouds, but Kay didn’t care. She had saved two lives now, and while it had taken a good portion of her energy, she felt good. She hadn’t felt like this since she ran with her old gang.
She felt a genuine smile spread across her lips. Mitis had had her baby, and he lived. He would forever carry a part of Kay within him. The spark that had brought him back to this world. Kay had already planned his education on how he would build energy shields and weapons appropriate for his age as more brothers rose in the ranks. But for now, she needed to concentrate on finding this deer.
Kay knew following the deer would be impossible with the rain from the last few days, but it hadn’t rained for several hours now, and there had even been an hour of sun so hot that it had baked the soil long enough for it not to be a liquid mess.
She squatted and looked at the sign around her. It was likely that the deer and others like its kind would be heading to the water now that the sun was moving away from noon. Perhaps they would even be bunking down in the hollows. Either way, Kay knew that she would have better luck finding the deer by the river than endlessly searching the undergrowth.
She knew of an overlook that surveyed a large portion of the river. She could creep up to the edge and see if there was anything to see. If she was lucky, some deer could be spotted, and if she was really lucky, she could see the white deer.
She had no illusions of finding the deer on her first day out, but she was filled with emotions that she wasn’t used to feeling, and they were wriggling inside of her. She needed time to reflect. Things had been good for so long that she had forgotten about the pain that she would occasionally wake up from.
She gritted her teeth and made her way to the ridge. She approached it slowly, then sank into the mud to crawl forward. She didn’t want to be spotted, and rolling in the mud was a great way to hide her own scent if she did spot something.
Joy exploded in her chest when she saw the white deer. It wasn’t just any deer. It was a massive stage, and it had several does with fawns following him. The stag stood on the other side of the river with its head held high, looking out for any danger.
Kay measured the distance between her and the stag. She was still low on energy, but if she created several steps and covered herself in her armour, she should be able to make it to the stag and end it before it even noticed her. Her armour would protect her from the fall, and the claws would make quick work of the stag.
Slowly, she bled her energy out and ensured that her helm was closed, showing off the appearance of a wolf. Then she jumped into action. The sensation of falling was thrilling, as she knew that she only needed to land on a few energy steps to make it to her quarry.
She hit her first two marks and was just about to hit her second last step when lightning flashed, and thunder tore the sky open. The blow spun Kay in the air, causing her to crash into the swollen river with an agonising crunch, before she was washed downstream.
Within seconds, the deer herd had disappeared, and several people on the side of the river Kay had come from hissed in disappointment. “Gods be damned, I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it for myself.” Muttered one as he put a weapon to his back.
“A flying wolf. Unbelievable.”
“A star wolf.” Grunted another man as he shook his hands out.
“A star wolf?” asked another.
“What else could it have been? None of your weapons could hit it.”
The men murmured as the one shaking his hands pulled up his hood to cover himself as the rain started coming down.
“Tsk, that coat would have been an amazing gift for my son. Bah! No use trying to hunt the remains in the river with this deluge. To the village.”
And as quickly as they had appeared, the small party of men made their way to the village, leaving the area as if nothing had happened.
Well then, now we have a problem.
