La Casa de la Amistad, un almuerzo inesperado/The House of Friendship, an unexpected lunch (Esp-Eng)

¿No les ha pasado que, sin hacer planes, muchas veces las cosas salen mejor? Y eso mismo fue lo que me pasó recientemente cuando vi este lugar. Iba caminando y saltó a mi vista esta hermosa mansión.

Hello, my friends at Worldmappin. It's a pleasure to greet you once again.

Hasn't it happened to you that things often turn out better when you make no plans at all? That's exactly what happened to me recently when I came across this place. I was walking along when this beautiful mansion caught my eye.

En su momento, esta fue la casa de Juan Pedro Baró y Catalina Lasa, dos personajes importantes de la aristocracia habanera. Una de las mansiones más ricas entre las residencias de la época y precursora de la modernidad. La sobriedad y elegancia de su fachada, a tono con las exigencias del Renacimiento italiano, así como la riqueza de los materiales utilizados en su decoración interior, hacen sobresalir a esta casa entre otras de la Habana.

At one time, this was the home of Juan Pedro Baró and Catalina Lasa, two important figures of Havana's aristocracy. One of the wealthiest mansions among the residences of its era, and a forerunner of modernity. The sobriety and elegance of its façade, in keeping with the demands of the Italian Renaissance, as well as the richness of the materials used in its interior decoration, make this house stand out among others in Havana.

Después de 1959, la mansión fue arrendada como sede de la embajada de Francia. En la década de los años setenta, fue la Casa de la Amistad Cuba-URSS y en la actualidad es la sede de la Casa de la Amistad, perteneciente al Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos. El lugar posee jardines bellos y un área, en el patio, donde se hacen las actividades culturales.

After 1959, the mansion was leased as the seat of the French embassy. In the 1970s, it became the Cuba-USSR House of Friendship, and today it is the headquarters of the House of Friendship, belonging to the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples. The place has beautiful gardens and an area in the courtyard where cultural activities take place.

La Casa de la Amistad, ubicada en la Avenida Paseo, entre las calles 17 y 19, cuenta con restaurante, bar y tienda de puros (tabacos). También se celebran actividades culturales. Se ha convertido en un sitio de referencia para los visitantes y turistas. Adentro el lujo y el esplendor aún se notan. Como otras casa del Vedado, aquí también hay una hermosa escalera y un gran vital de colores que la claridad no me permitió tomar bien.

The House of Friendship, located on Paseo Avenue between 17th and 19th Streets, has a restaurant, bar, and cigar shop. Cultural events are also held there. It has become a reference point for visitors and tourists. Inside, the luxury and splendor are still noticeable. Like other houses in El Vedado, there is also a beautiful staircase here and a great play of colors that the light didn't allow me to capture well.

Esta fue una visita que no estaba prevista. El hambre me sorprendió al mediodía cuando ya daba por perdida la hora de almorzar. Caminaba por esta calle del Vedado, cuando el destello de unas paredes naranjas me detuvo en seco. Tan vibrantes eran que parecían gritar. Una joven gastronómica me dijo que ofertan almuerzo a muy buen precio y calidad.

This was an unplanned visit. Hunger caught me at midday when I had already given up on lunchtime. I was walking along this street in El Vedado when the flash of some orange walls stopped me dead in my tracks. They were so vibrant they seemed to shout. A young woman working in food service told me they offer lunch at a very good price and quality.

El restaurante se encuentra ubicado en un lateral de la casa, en un espacio fresco y abierto. Me recibió la sonrisa genuina de un camarero que me guió y me dijo que escogiera la mesa que quisiera. Entré y vi manteles verdes como yerba fresca que cubrían cada mesa. Era tan chillón como armonioso. Y entré sin pensarlo. El sol y las sombras tenían los manteles de distintas tonalidades de verde. El contraste con las paredes naranjas me recordó a una puesta de sol. Cuando vi la carta no dudé un instante. Camarones, le dije. Y ella me recomendó que ese era el plato del día con una seguridad que inspiraba confianza.

The restaurant is located on the side of the house, in a fresh, open space. I was greeted by the genuine smile of a waiter who guided me and told me to choose any table I liked. I went in and saw green tablecloths like fresh grass covering every table. It was as garish as it was harmonious. I walked in without a second thought. The sun and shadows painted the tablecloths in different shades of green. The contrast with the orange walls reminded me of a sunset. When I saw the menu, I didn't hesitate for a moment. "Shrimp," I said. And she recommended that as the dish of the day with a confidence that inspired trust.

Luego de un rato de espera (no mucho), llegó el arroz blanco, humeante y perfecto. Los camarones, dorados justo en su punto. A un lado, el plátano hervido partido en rodajas generosas, y una ensalada de col y tomate fresquísima, con ese punto crujiente que solo tiene lo recién cortado. Pedí una cerveza bien fría. El primer bocado fue una bendición, la suavidad del arroz, el sabor intenso del marisco, la dulzura del plátano y el ácido de la ensalada bailando juntos en mi boca.

After a short wait (not long), the white rice arrived, steaming and perfect. The shrimp, golden and cooked just right. On the side, boiled plantain cut into generous slices, and a fresh cabbage and tomato salad, with that crunchy touch that only freshly cut vegetables have. I ordered a very cold beer. The first bite was a blessing: the softness of the rice, the intense flavor of the seafood, the sweetness of the plantain, and the acidity of the salad all dancing together in my mouth.

Pero lo que más me sorprendió fue el trato. El camarero se acercaba en el momento justo, preguntaba sin agobiar, reía con naturalidad. Desde la barra, el resto de los trabajadores me dedicaron un brindis silencioso al ver cómo disfrutaba. Me sentí más invitada que cliente. Bueno, también era la única.

But what surprised me most was the service. The waiter came by at just the right moment, asked without being pushy, laughed naturally. From the bar, the rest of the staff made a silent toast to me as they watched me enjoy my meal. I felt more like a guest than a customer. Well, I was also the only one there.

Terminé el plato y la cerveza con calma y relajada. No quería irme de ese pequeño universo naranja y verde donde un almuerzo imprevisto se había convertido en uno de esos recuerdos que se quedan para siempre. Salí satisfecha, con la barriga llena y el alma más ligera. A veces los mejores planes son los que nunca hiciste. Fue un almuerzo inesperado en un rincón de colores.

I finished the dish and the beer calmly and relaxed. I didn't want to leave that little orange-and-green universe where an unplanned lunch had become one of those memories that stay with you forever. I left satisfied, with a full belly and a lighter soul. Sometimes the best plans are the ones you never made. It was an unexpected lunch in a colorful corner.
