Across the deck, the red glow of the Captain’s pipe stood out in the approaching darkness. Despite the cheerful response of all crew, the Captain knew a growing sense of gloom was lingering in the hearts of all. ‘Would they get through the night in peace?’ He wondered as he took a long draw on his pipe and let out a large plume of blue smoke in the shape of an arrow that wafted in the breeze and slowly broke apart into nothingness under the glow of the early evening ship’s lanterns.

[Seneca Village…early morning…] Big Bear lay shaking on a bed of animal skins in Chief Minetoh’s longhouse. His shoulder was wrapped in wet beech leaves and moss and his face grimaced in pain…

“He not live another two days…” [Translated] The Chief whispered to Running Fox at the far side of the room. “What can we do?!” Running Fox asked. “The Shaman has done everything he can. May the Great Spirit take him gently." Tears welled up in Running Fox’s eyes as he gazed at his life-long friend laying stricken on the floor…

“The thunder stick is a terrible weapon!” He exclaimed in a bitter tone. “They will not be back! We set fire to their great ship and the river has washed them away!” The Chief consoled with pride.

[On the Silverton…two bells into the morning watch…] Just before dawn, the Captain ordered the gun crew to be replaced with fresh men... “A long night...” Commander Kerrislravenhill said she watched as the exhausted crew stumbled away to find their bunks.

“I want you to command the second gin crew Errisl…” “Aye Sairrr. What is your intention if I may ask Sairrr?” Kerrislravenhill asked as she pondered his next move. “We hoist anchor at foo sunrise an heads up-river.” He said as he gazed off to the forests lining the eastern bank of the river.

“But the fire….Sairrr?” “Och- there’ll be fire! An’ thaur wull be fire in returns!” The Captain answered with grit in his voice as he turned and walked away.

“Time for a cup of tea…” Kerrisl whispered to herself with a great exhalation as she quickly made her way down the stairs towards the galley before manning the next gun watch.

"Cheers to the survivors!" Standing Officer Trayan said in a cheery mock-toast with his raised coffee mug.

"A cup of tea for you, I chose this cup fit for a captain, I serve it with much affection and respect!" Warrant Officer Lupega added holding his special cup.

"Ye know how to please the crew!" Lieutenant Bleujay said as she walked up to the officer's table.

"Lieutenant Sairrr! You're alright?!" Trayan asked in surprise at seeing her, "Hack gave you a clean slate?"

"He gave me more than that!" Bleujay replied with a roll of her eyes as she sat down and took a plain off the large tray, "Greetings Sailors, congratulations to Officer Trumpman...hats off to ye! Congratulations to Pocketechange and Tamaralovelace ....yer hard work is paying off...it is! Sail oan sailors all!"

"Hear-Hear!" They all cheered in a warm welcome back.

The warm feelings and kind words exchanged between the crew was a cheery scene. But none of them knew what the day would bring, no, not one of them. 〰️⛵〰️ ⛵〰️ ⛵ 〰️⛵〰️
