The Plaza de Armas was the first to be built in the nascent Havana and, as its name suggests, it was the space where military exercises and maneuvers were carried out back in the 16th century, when one of the first fortresses was erected here to protect the town from pirate attacks. It was a rather rustic site at the gates of the Port of Havana, where the few constructions that existed were very simple and humble, typical of a city that was just beginning to grow.

As the inhabitants increased, the plaza was transformed and ceased to be a military space to become a place of recreation. It was embellished with fountains, filled with vegetation, and became one of the favorite plazas of the Habaneros. It also gained fame thanks to the buildings that were gradually erected around it and that today are part of the traditions and historical memory of the city. Both the plaza and the buildings that surround it are declared National Monuments for the value they represent in Cuban history and culture. They are:

El Templete, where under the shade of a ceiba tree that became a symbol of Havana, the first mass and the first town council of the villa were celebrated. Each year in this site the foundation of the city is remembered, and the inhabitants come to pay homage to this date. The Castillo de la Real Fuerza, one of the first defensive constructions, which in its time was the safest building of the town and the residence of several captains general.

The Palace of the Captains General, a magnificent colonial building where the governors of the island lived. It is the most outstanding architectural jewel of the surroundings and currently houses the Museum of the City of Havana. The Palace of the Second Lieutenant, another of the sites admired for its colonial architecture, which adds elegance and character to the Plaza de Armas.

During the past century this place was completely restored, including the buildings that surround it, becoming a site of great tourist attraction. Here one can learn in detail the history of the colonial period in Cuba and marvel at the grandeur of the constructions that have been preserved to this day.

The statue of the man who made this marvel possible is located at the entrance of the old Palace of the Captains General, where he had his offices and from where he directed the reconstruction of the old area of the city. He is the unforgettable historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal, a man of great culture, intelligence, and love for Cuba.

This closing reinforces the idea of historical continuity and pays homage to the figure who ensured that the Plaza de Armas continues to be today a symbol of identity and memory for Havana.

La Plaza de Armas fue la primera en construirse en la naciente Habana y, como su nombre lo sugiere, era el espacio donde se realizaban los ejercicios y maniobras militares allá por el siglo XVI, cuando aquí se levantó una de las primeras fortalezas destinadas a resguardar a la villa de los ataques piratas. Era un sitio bastante rústico a las puertas del Puerto de La Habana, donde las pocas construcciones que existían eran muy sencillas y humildes, propias de una ciudad que apenas comenzaba a crecer.

A medida que aumentaron los habitantes la plaza se fue transformando y dejó de ser un espacio militar para convertirse en un lugar de recreación. Se embelleció con fuentes, se llenó de vegetación y pasó a ser una de las plazas preferidas por los habaneros. También ganó celebridad gracias a las edificaciones que poco a poco se fueron levantando a su alrededor y que hoy forman parte de las tradiciones y la memoria histórica de la ciudad.
