Splinterlands: Spellmonger's thorns is great
Splinterlands is a complex game, and it allows for various cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various rulesets applied, and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a great battle where I won because I used Spellmonger.
Featured cards
Spellmonger is a neutral splinter that costs 4 mana. This splinter starts with the @leoglossary/leoglossary-thorns-ability" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">thorns and untrainable ability. This card can't be weapon-trained, so it can be limited in some cases. I do use this card from time to time in Frontier because it could be useful in some rulesets/lineups.
Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

This ruleset is interesting because magic monsters are not as useful, and ranged monsters will be random. So, melee monsters are the way to go.
| Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aurelia | 6 | Summoner | +1 Health |
| Dread Tafarian | 9 | 1st | Heal |
| Vicious Quilliun | 5 | 2nd | Opportunity |
| Spellmonger | 4 | 3rd | Thorns |
| Total Mana: | 24 | ||
| My summoner is Aurelia for the +1 health. My tank is Dread Tafarian with heal. Vicious Quilliun is my other damage dealer with opportunity, and Spellmonger has thorns. |
The focus of this lineup is to keep my monsters alive while dealing damage and outlasting my opponent. Dread is my first chance of a tank, and Spellmonger is there to take the opportunity and sneak attacks. Melee monsters are the best choice for this fight so Spellmonger just looks like the best card to use.
Round 1
At first glance, I think that this match can go either way. My opponent has a level advantage, but I do think that Spellmonger was the correct choice.
Round 4
A few rounds later, my opponent is down to 1 monster while I still have all of mine. Spellmonger did its job to help me wipe out that opportunity monster, and my opponent just doesn't have enough damage to turn this match around.
I won that match later that round.
Conclusion
The battle this time did go exactly as planned. Spellmonger was the correct choice in the last position as it took those opportunity hits. This allowed me to wipe out my opponent's backline and win this match. My opponent had a level advantage, and the only difference in our lineups was a single monster.
You can see my entire match here.
What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.
