​​The first few days of a new school season are always buzzing with excitement. But as the novelty fades, the reality of early alarms and piles of homework starts to set in. Luckily, this past week was a wonderful distraction for Gurseerat because my brother and his family were staying with us. ​It was such a blessing to have all the cousins together before they flew back home abroad. However, the goodbye was incredibly tough. Gurseerat could not hold back her tears as they left for the airport. Despite a four year age gap, she and my brother’s eldest daughter became inseparable. They had that classic sibling energy, arguing one minute and playing together the next, often wanting to do exactly what the other was doing. ​As the older one, Gurseerat naturally took on the role of "little caretaker" during their games. After they left, she was in a somber mood for hours. It’s only natural, even we adults struggle to manage our emotions when a house full of love suddenly goes quiet.

नए स्कूल सत्र के शुरुआती कुछ दिन हमेशा उत्साह से भरे होते हैं। लेकिन जैसे-जैसे यह नयापन कम होने लगता है, सुबह जल्दी उठने और होमवर्क के ढेर की असलियत सामने आने लगती है। सौभाग्य से, पिछला हफ्ता गुरसीरत के लिए एक बहुत अच्छा बदलाव रहा क्योंकि मेरे भाई और उनका परिवार हमारे साथ रुके हुए थे। ​उनके विदेश वापस जाने से पहले सभी भाई-बहनों का एक साथ होना किसी वरदान से कम नहीं था। हालांकि, विदाई का वह समय बहुत कठिन था। जब वे एयरपोर्ट के लिए निकले, तो गुरसीरत अपने आंसू नहीं रोक पाई। उम्र में चार साल का अंतर होने के बावजूद, वह और मेरे भाई की बड़ी बेटी एक-दूसरे के बहुत करीब आ गए थे। उनके बीच भाई-बहनों वाली वही पुरानी ऊर्जा दिख रही थी—एक पल लड़ना और अगले ही पल साथ खेलना, और अक्सर वही काम करना जो दूसरा कर रहा हो। ​बड़ी होने के नाते, गुरसीरत ने खेल-कूद के दौरान स्वाभाविक रूप से सबकी देखभाल करने की जिम्मेदारी संभाल ली थी। उनके जाने के बाद, वह घंटों तक उदास रही। यह स्वाभाविक भी है; जब प्यार से भरा घर अचानक शांत हो जाता है, तो हम बड़े भी अपनी भावनाओं को संभालने में संघर्ष करते हैं।
