Something I never thought I'd see in a coffee shop

Greetings, coffee lovers around the world!
Today I'm sharing a story about something my husband, some friends, and I witnessed in a coffee shop a few months ago. It was something I never thought I'd see in a coffee shop, and it became a topic of conversation long after we left.

We were enjoying our coffees in a coffee shop when, suddenly, a woman around 70 years old stopped at the entrance, looking inside.
After a while, she asked if she could come in, and we all said yes, since there were empty chairs.
The woman came in, but not to sit at any of the tables. Instead, she started begging for money.

I hadn't expected that at all. I felt sorry for the poor woman, as she reminded me of my grandmother. I can't imagine how badly off, how alone she must have felt, begging for money in the streets and cafes.
At least, that's what I thought at the time. The people at the other tables started giving her some money. One of my friends told us she only had a $10 bill, since the rest of our money was on credit cards. We don't usually carry much cash.
I told her to give it to her. After all, it was just $10 more for the old lady.

When we got to our table, we gave the bill to the grandmother. She took it with both hands, looked at it from the front and the back, placed it on the table, and with her fingertips, dismissively pushed it away from her.

Our astonishment lasted only a few seconds. But as she passed by, the first thing I asked her, no longer feeling sorry for the poor old lady, was, "Do you have so much money that you're turning down these $10 we're giving you?" We said more to her, but it's not worth repeating. Apparently, since the other tables had given her $20 and $50 bills, our $10 seemed insufficient to her.

The woman never responded to anything. She continued on her way and left the cafe. All of us who remained started talking about what had just happened. No one had imagined such a scene. Even today, we sometimes remember it and talk about it again.
