Monomad Challenge: Delhi, the city that doesn’t need a monochrome filter

Hello, Black and White community! It’s been so long since I’ve joined this #monomad challenge! I always follow you all; I love monochrome, especially in scenes like the ones I’m sharing today.

This time, I wanted to come back with something original, real, powerful, and, of course, something that would really shine in grayscale. What better place than Delhi for this? Yes, Delhi, the Indian city that, though bursting with color, is shrouded in a cloud of pollution so thick you can’t see anything clearly.

Monomad Challenge: Delhi, la ciudad que no necesita un filtro monocromático

¡Hola comunidad de Black and White en este #monomad challenge después de hace tanto tiempo! Siempre los sigo; amo el monocromático, especialmente en escenas como las que comparto hoy.

En esta ocasión quería retomar con algo original, real, fuerte y que, por supuesto, subiera su valor en escala de grises. ¿Qué mejor que Delhi para esto? Sí, Delhi, la ciudad de la India que, aunque repleta de colores, cuenta con una nube de contaminación esparcida por toda la ciudad, tan fuerte que no se puede apreciar nada nítidamente.

The colors aren’t clear, the sounds aren’t either, and the sensations become that same haze of confusion. Delhi is, I’d say, one of the darker sides of India. There’s evil but also goodness in its society; yet the neglect and chaos in this city are so overwhelming that beauty can only be seen if you try to immerse yourself in it.

Los colores no son claros, los sonidos tampoco lo son, y las sensaciones se convierten en esa misma nebulosa de confusión. Delhi es, yo diría, una de las facetas oscuras de India. Hay maldad pero también bondad en su sociedad; pero el abandono y el caos que hay en esta ciudad impactan de manera tal que lo bello solamente se puede ver si intentás encapsularte en ello.

Anyway, here, my friends, are the streets of the famous Paharganj neighborhood, a favorite among tourists because of its proximity to New Delhi Station, which connects to the airport—a station that is, curiously enough, clean, orderly, and well-managed, standing in stark contrast to the reality just ten meters away. You’ll see shops, vendors selling various goods and raw materials, India’s iconic tuk-tuks, some facial expressions, a bit of dust in the air, and whatever other images or emotions these photos evoke in you.

En fin, aquí mis amigos, las calles del famoso barrio de Paharganj, el elegido por los turistas debido a su cercanía con la estación Nueva Delhi, que conecta con el aeropuerto; una estación curiosamente limpia, ordenada y controlada que contrasta directamente con la realidad que se encuentra a diez metros de distancia.

Verán tiendas, vendedores de diversos productos y materias primas, los destacados tuk-tuk de India, algunas expresiones, algo de tierra en el aire, y cualquier otra imagen o emoción que estas imágenes generen en ustedes.

When you cross that threshold, you’re hit by a reality that black and white captures better than any color. In these photos, I tried to show how pollution seeps into everything: into people’s eyes and into the very air you breathe. It’s a scene where cables and dust seem to swallow up the buildings, and where chaos forces you to stay alert at every step. There are no filters here; it’s simply the city showing itself as it is, without pretense or embellishment. It’s Delhi in its purest and most exhausting state.

Al cruzar ese umbral, te golpea una realidad que el blanco y negro resume mejor que cualquier color. En estas fotos intenté mostrar cómo la contaminación se mete en todo: en la mirada de la gente y en el aire mismo que respirás. Es un escenario donde los cables y el polvo parecen tragarse a los edificios, y donde el caos te obliga a estar alerta a cada paso. Acá no hay filtros, es simplemente la ciudad mostrándose tal cual es, sin vueltas y sin adornos. Es Delhi en su estado más puro y agotador.
