The early believers, despite persecution, kept preaching the secret behind their courage and how it speaks to us in our time.
Looking into the Old Testament era, from the New Testament stand I've often marveled at the courage and behavior of the early Christians. How did they find the strength to preach God's Word during such dangerous, discouraging and uncertain times? When I reflect on their response to persecution, I conclude that they must have understood some vital truths that many of us today may have either forgotten or overlooked.
One of those truths is rooted in Jesus' words in Luke 12: 15 which says:
"A man's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses"
The early church lived with an eternal perspective. They looked at life through God's eyes, not through the lens of comfort, wealth, or personal safety. What mattered most to God took first place in their lives. That's why persecution didn't silence them; instead, it fueled their mission. Jesus did not keep this truth away from us. It's sad how some preachers today give people the idea that becoming a christian excludes is from tribulations. This is far from the truth. As a matter of fact, they are bound to come. It is part of the experiences of the christian race. But the good news is that we are assured by Christ that we will overcome them all and victory will be ours.
