Sadly, many people only reflect on their lives once a year. But to live with true purpose, we ought to number not just our days but our hours, minutes and even seconds. The more intentionally we examine our lives, day by day, hour by hour, the better we become. If you want to live a full life with no regrets, your life must be built on values that last. What are values? Your values are your core beliefs, the principles that shape everything you do. Your beliefs shape your behavior and your behavior determines what you become. Your convictions determine your conduct and your conduct shapes your character. If you desire a life of lasting success and significance, you must build it on values that endure. Someone said to Jesus in the book of Luke 12:13-21 (TLB): "Sir, please tell my brother to divide my father's estate with me." Jesus replied, "Man, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that? Beware! Don't always be wishing for what you don't have. For real life and real living are not related to how rich we are." And He concluded, "...every man is a fool who gets rich on earth but not in heaven". King Solomon, who experienced wealth, power, honor, fame and pleasure in abundance saw earthly life at its best yet concluded that it all added up to emptiness. His purpose in writing Ecclesiastes was to share his personal testimony and regrets, urging us not to make the same mistakes. Solomon's life is a lasting reminder of the futility of basing our values on possessions and ambition. We must learn to prioritize the values of the mind and spirit above material gain. Any individual or nation that builds its foundation on materialism is heading for disaster.
